Description April is Autism Awareness Month.

"Stimming is a jargon term for a particular form of stereotypy, a repetitive body movement (often done unconsciously) that self-stimulates one or more senses in a regulated manner. It is shorthand for self-stimulation...Many people with autism exhibit stereotypy. Common forms of stereotypy among people with autism include hand flapping, body spinning or rocking, lining up or spinning toys or other objects, echolalia, perseveration, and repeating rote phrases."

My son was diagnosed with 'being on the austic spectrum' in December of 2007. We suspected it as early as August of the same year. One of the signs that indicated he might have autism was his obsessive need to line up objects. Blocks, cars, pillows, books, crayons....whatever he could get a hold of, he almost always lined it up. It was just one of several 'symptoms' he exhibited. Luckily for us, a gf/cf diet and early intervention have helped him reduce his need for stimmying, as well as improved eye contact, increased interaction with others, and improved speech. We are among the lucky.

I love this, my son loves lining stuff up.  I know this dev is 7 years old, I hope your son is doing well.  My little guy is 7, he was diagnosed in 2011.

My little brother does this, but he also likes to ask people when they are born and how many rooms does their house has or how many siblings or kids they have. And he remembers all this information. My sports teacher (in America they call that PE or what) said that autist are either skinny or fat, no midway.
But I also like to put things in order, but just when I want, it's rare.

My older brother is autistic, and since I'm around him all the time I recognize lots of other people with autism wherever I go, so I guess it's way more common than people think.

I personally hate the idea of a 'cure' for autisum. Autism is engrained into ones personality, you cannot remove it and be left with a 'normal' person. I think people need to stop viewing it as a disease that needs to be cured and more as a personality thing. What I find upsetting is how people want to cure autism regardless of wheter people with the condition actually think they need to be cured or want to be cured.

Not directly related to this, but there you go.

SparklyDest In reply to JessamineDiane [2012-03-29 12:28:07 +0000 UTC]

I agree 100%. I don't think it is a disease that can be cured, it is just part of who they are....like being left-handed or afraid of spiders. I don't want to cure my son, I just want to help me to be better able to adapt in a world that is not built for his way of thinking.

Someone, a very wise person, once told me that some people believe that it's actually autistic people who think 'right' or 'correctly'. It's those without autism who's thinking isn't right, LOL. I'm not sure if I explained that clearly.... If not, just tell me. I think this is true though.

I have High-functioning Autism, and I often rock back and forth out of excitement. I used to flap my hands when I was younger, until I started clenching my hands (also out of excitement). I have a habit of repeating rote phrases, and I tend to grunt or make noises not too often. I can really relate to this emote.
