Description " . . . just like you, Mum!

"Oh, Balthic, you can be anything you want.  You don't have to be a gas lighter like you mother."

"No!  I want to learn about gas and air and fire and how to stop it!  Our name's even Fireslayer!"

"You might change your mind when you have to shave your beard to wear the mask."

"I don't care!  Because no beard is worth someone's life, is it, Mum?"

"*Chuckles* No, no it isn't."

Okay, so, my beardless dwarf woman.  I decided to make her a gas lighter.  Discworld dwarves have something like that - I think the gas lighters were the start of grags - not sure, haven't read the Fifth Elephant in a while.  BUT I thought, like modern firefighters, technically inclined dwarves would come up with a portable oxygen supply to keep thier gas lighters from keeling over from the gas fumes and/or smoke inhalation.  However, a dwarf wouldn't be able to wear anything more substantial than a goatee and properly seal the mask.

Hence Blodwen FireSlayer doesn't have a beard because she shaves it off.  End of song.

Her son, Balthic, is eager to follow in his mother's footsteps.  Yes, his beard is already growing in. XD  I haven't decided if Balthic is the baby Blodwen was carrying in the battle picture or if he's an older child.

Heee! Thanks.  We've got to give the dwarf race some hope.  Seems like everyone wants to paint them as gold-lusting perverts.

Well gold-lusting perverts have their uses but yeah, this is really awesome and sweet. I like it.

On a dwarf kick lately.  If it's not that, it's Frost Giants.

Thanks!  One thing I love -- well, there's several things I love about Discworld dwarves vs. LOTR dwarves, but one of them is that Discworld dwarves are the main drivers of technological progress on the disc.  They are engineers and makers of Devices, doohickies, and thingamabobs.

What a wonderful back-story! Write more please!!

As for the beardless dwarf-women I don't see why she has to have a beard but there are things that point to all dwarves having beards and the women being few and far between and almost distinguishable from the men. I much like your version better considering she's a Mum and not all dwarves have to be scowling like Thorin. Kili and Fili are darlings!

Weeeeeell, I thought it was LOTR canon that all dwarves have beards.  I just got the first Hobbit on DVD today and when they were doing the flashback to Dale, there's women walking around the city who are *clearly* supposed to be dwarves - about two feet shorter than everyone else -- and have no beards.  When the dwarves are fleeing Eregorn proper, the few ladies we get a glimpse of have teeny, whispy beards.

So I guess Blodwen doesn't need a reason to not have a beard after all.

I agree having been gently told by another that it's in the Pratchett universe that all dwarves have beards. Maybe the longer they Ladies live the more facial hair they get. It's not uncommon for Human Ladies to do the same as we age!

Blodwen is right on the money for me. I wrote about a Hobbit-woman a long time ago on HASA; I really should submit that but I read it and I tend to tweak it!

This is set in Terry Pratchett's Discworld where all Dwarfs definitely do have beards.  In the story "Unseen Academicals," a beautiful supermodel-like human woman is hired to model the newest micro-mail.  They give her a fake beard and, as her best friend observes, "she makes it work."

Actually, it's inspired by Discworld.  I haven't decided if it actually takes place there.

Just finished reading "Raising Steam."  I can now assure you that (if you want) you can be proud to call yourself a Diskworld Dwarf.

Ah, thank you! I sometimes get my genres and worlds jumbled up together in my head. I'll have to go back and pull the book out of our home-Library for a good read. I know Nanny said in her cookbook that all dwarves had beards because "I never would have known she wasn't a he until (a Dwarf) became very ill and it turned out to be young Olaf" (paraphrasing).
Of course I have the Hobbit pulled out as well just to read again since my Housemates are going on and on about the so-called romance (I call it protective friendship) between Tauriel and Kili.
I know Tauriel is NOT in the book but I'm a bit muddled on the Laketown sequence. My storage-mind left about 7-8 years ago due to the onset of Lupus and Fibro so sometimes I miss details.
