Description Yaaaargh! Big file! D:

There are a ton of wolf drawing tutorials, but I haven't come across a wolf coloration guide, so I decided to make one.
This is my first real tutorial (that's not in the form of an edumacationical video), so feedback would be great! I didn't proofread it either... I just wanted to get it done XD

Remember, this is only a very general guideline; wolves come in an incredible number of color schemes, patterns, and designs. I also didn't get into facial markings at all, since those can get messy XD

Edit- Extra little bit of helpful information:
The color, black, is usually only seen in North American wolves; you won't find many black wolves in Europe or Asia. Scientists have speculated this is because the American wolves interbred with dogs that humans brought in from Asia way back when, but the exact reason is not known for sure.
Edit- Update:
DNA testing has proven that the black coloring, which is found in about half of North America's wolves, came from dogs. Any black wolves you see in European zoos are most likely from North America (check for the third part of the scientific name: occidentalis, baileyi, arctos, lycaon, and nubilus are some North American subspecies)

Cool, I love things like this. The different age, different color section was especially helpful. You asked for feedback, more reference pics would be cool (I'm one of those "Give me an example." type of people) links in the artist comments would work fine. Also it would be cool if there was some information on the genetics of color would be awesome if you knew it. (Or know a link with the information.) Anyway, great job and thanks for the information.

You're right; it could definately use more reference images. Plus, I just recently learned that I used photos of two very differently colored subspecies as examples, and the drawn wolf looks like yet another subspecies! Looks like this guide is in need of an update!

I was considering making a guide regarding the differences between some of the gray wolf subspecies, as well as dogs and wolfdogs. Do you think that would be more helpful than a re-do of this one?

Thank you so much for the suggestions; I really appreciate your feedback!

nice tutorial, it makes sense in the end lol. And hey! I learned something new bout the aging thing, white wolves look so much cooler but I never knew they were oooold.

Thanks! I'm glad you learned from it!
Haha, no worries! Not all white wolves are old; this tutorial only covers tan-gray or agouti wolves, which fade with age. A good number of wolves are born all white or white with black ticking (one of my favorites!)

Oh lol, another valuable lesson about wolves, i wanted to start drawing anthropomorphic wolves and I guess I was lucky enough to find this tutorial that covers the colour and markings.

Lucky me!
