I thought that the idea is more simple and transparent.
If compared to the usual sleep, the everlasting sleep of death may have its dreams and nightmares. A dream catcher catches bad dreams leaving good ones to the sleeper. Thus dream catchers can save the dead from nightmares of their eternal sleep.

Ah, those of us who believe in Heaven and hell do not see death as an eternal sleep. We wink out in one life and open our eyes in another, and it is either very nice or very bad.
Your ideas are interesting though.
