Description
Tenebrous, "Teneb" to his friends, is one of Phobos' elder sons second only to Necrosis and Manias, and twin to Fomuire. Teneb embodies the fear of the dark, space, and silence, giving him skills that are invaluable as the "Left Hand" of the Royalty, as judge, jury, and executioner of drakes who abuse their power. A rather unfortunate role for one as talkative and friendly as Teneb is.
Personality: contrary to birth or occupation, Teneb is generally cheery and social. Despite everything life has put him through as the son of a draconian, Teneb has always looked to the bright side of things and is usually an ardent optimist, always looking forward to what the future may bring. He forms strong bonds with those willing to give him a chance and look past his appearance. He loves to play and entertain when he's not working, and gets along particularly well with children. As part of his job, Teneb has an acute sense of right and wrong and determining the various shades of grey between them. In spite of all of this, as an unfortunate reminder of his draconian parent, he is a deadly and efficient killer, long desensitized to bloodshed. While Teneb would never harm the innocent and takes no joy in pointless violence, he is decisive and brutal to those he is sent for or those who wish others harm, a lesson Lord General Vulcan regretfully learned the hard way. Teneb is not intentionally violent or sadistic but because of his work, his appearance, and his heritage, other drakes Fear him and tend to see him as evil, an ill omen, or perhaps even his own biggest fear: his father.
Powers: Teneb is what others would call a shadow drake, one of only 2 known to drakes in all of their history, with the first considered by many to be entirely fictional, meaning he possesses abilities even the most powerful or knowledgeable drakes consider totally alien. Teneb possesses power over shadows, using his control over them to create pockets of void space devoid of all sound or feeling. These voids alone make Teneb exceptionally powerful, able to crush or "erase" anything caught in them. Not only is Teneb able to weaponize and control shadows, but also use them to travel and hide, passing through them like doorways to and from places unknown to appear wherever he chooses instantly. Sound is naturally within his influence, most notably he is able to totally silence all sound in various ranges, or even selectively, giving him a surprising amount of control in even the worst situations. As with all of Phobos' children, Teneb is able to exploit the fears of those he encounters, especially those with fears that fall within his influences.
Abilities: Teneb is very acrobatic and flexible, even for a drake. He is capable of contorting well past the usual physical limit. His skill with a blade and his "unnatural" powers have been honed over the course of many millennia since his birth and his natural immortality as a royal drake makes him an incredibly lethal assassin. Using his talents he is one of few drakes to be labelled "royal slayer" in his service to the high king and queen, as it is his job to enact justice on other royal drakes where others could not. Teneb's healing is off the charts, even for a royal drake, which actually causes him problems as he lacks a mouth. In order to do something as simple as eating or drinking, Teneb must tear his own jaws open and eat before his wound heals. Like all drakes he is a natural shapeshifter, and he loves taking other forms to interact with others, but even in these other forms he can only mimic the appearance of having a closed mouth. Teneb is only able to speak using the special collar around his neck which projects his voice for him.
History: Born early in Phobos's reign, Teneb was raised to be a weapon for his father to guide and control, a tool to "silence" anyone who would speak out against him and his cruelty. Born mute, Teneb's sole purpose was to kill, his only reward was his right to live. He had no individual freedom, and no planned future beyond who his father wanted dead next. As more children of Phobos were born, Teneb could see the differences in which they were all raised, each with their own designated fate under their father's rule, and he started to question his own place in life, What he wanted, and what he felt was right and wrong. Teneb watched his elder siblings, Manias and Necrosis, and the ways they differed. How Manias rebelled every chance he got and failed every time he tried, How Necrosis served Phobos loyally, and only saw value in others once they had died, Teneb could see the only two choices he could make play out before him, to resist or to serve, and learned to fear his father's control because of it. In silence, he could only watch and listen as the coming uprising fell into place and the draconian, Fenris, arrived to defeat Phobos. With Manias missing, and Necrosis dead, Teneb saw his chance to right what was wrong, Instead of helping his father Like Necrosis had, Teneb helped his younger siblings and the remaining citizens escape the destruction, an act which spared them all of fenris' wrath.
With the end of Phobos and his rule, High King Helios, in his final years of ruling the drakes, took in the refugees and put Phobos' surviving children under his own protection, serving as a surrogate father to them all. An act of forgiveness which earned Teneb's affection and appreciation to Helios and the Royal family. As a gift, Helios gave Teneb the ability to speak, and the freedom to choose his own life. Instead of choosing to avoid the life he lived and to find his own happiness, he chose to face the injustices he witnessed under his father head on and never let such a monster rise again. Teneb chose to serve the king and all who would follow as a protector of those who cant defend themselves, and so Helios was obliged to place Teneb at his side as a guard and enforcer, to protect both drakes and mortals who could fall victim to them. Helios would soon disappear, much to Teneb's dismay, but Teneb's loyalty was steadfast and he would continue to serve every high king and queen after, protecting humanity and drakes from the shadows, unseen. This continued until High Queen Circe was awoken for her time to rule. To Teneb's shock, Circe despised him at first, utterly loathed him for his connection to a draconian, and wanted nothing to do with him or his siblings who her own brother protected and loved. In spite of him, Circe had taken in an arrogant young drake from the guard she had chosen specifically, Vulcan, and made him her right hand, the Lord General, a public figure.
Teneb refused to give up, and continued to serve and do his job despite the harsh treatment he was being subjected to, until one day while investigating reports of a drake helping humans and being worshiped as a god. The drake he encountered was no monster or cruel to his human neighbors, instead he had been serving as a healer and protector and been labelled as a god unintentionally by the humans who he had been living among in disguise. He was innocent, benevolent, and over time Teneb came to love him. It soon became known to Vulcan that Teneb had spared the "forest god"and sought the queen to force justice on both Teneb and his lover, but she refused his claims, and allowed Teneb and the earth drake to continue unpunished, an act which confused and enraged Vulcan. It wasnt long after that disaster would strike. The village the drake had been living in had mistaken him in his true form for a monster, and tried to kill him, hunting him down until he was ragged and hiding in his own home. in an act of self defense, he had accidentally killed a human, and gave Vulcan all the justification he needed to act in Teneb's place. Teneb was too late, and arrived to find Vulcan holding the drake's severed head and his soulshard shattered, Vulcan gloating over the desecrated corpse. In grief, and rage, Teneb saw a new target in Vulcan and unleashed a fury the Lord General could never have prepared for, decimating his right arm beyond recovery. Vulcan was only saved from Teneb's judgement by the High Queen, who now pitied Teneb after discovering even he, as a draconian demi-god, was capable of feeling pain and loss. She ordered the earth drake's remains be buried with all rites and that Vulcan never step out of line again. Circe Had learned to respect and appreciate Teneb and his siblings, despite their father and her own history with a draconian, and now keeps Teneb close at all times, as a close friend and protector.
