"Oh my, not again!" Muriel just put the hoof back down and Briar stood frantically next to the Shetland pony who was so not in the mood to have his hoof worked on. "Now come on, at least you don't need new irons like that one and you still act like that?" The girl pointed to Pidge, the Noriker stallion, who was standing obediently next to Muriel, waiting for his turn. However, no amount of pleading or begging got the pony to lift his hoof again. The treat was also quickly swallowed, but without the desired effect. Snorting, Briar dropped to the ground and crossed her arms in annoyance. "Well, it doesn't seem to be quite that easy with your own horse after all." Rhodry, who was assisting at the blacksmith appointment today, went down on one knee in front of Briar and grinned at the girl. "But all the girls who live on a horse farm have their own pony!" "Says who?" the friendly young man wanted to know, holding out his hand to help Briar stand up. "All my horse books!" "Well then." That was an argument the young man was unable to counter. Unfortunately, Flan insisted that his youngest daughter learn the proper way to handle a horse before she got one of her own, which had led to Briar's insistence on doing everything on the horse herself, including helping at the blacksmith appointment. Regardless of the fact that a six year old was the worst possible choice, Flan had agreed. And now there stood an offended girl who had not the slightest idea how to deal with a cheeky pony.
Flan stood scrutinizingly next to the row of horses, watching his daughter closely. "This would be a lot easier if Dad wasn't standing next to it, watching me warily!" complained Briar. "Cutie, you know the deal," came from her father. "For potentially dangerous things, either you or Lana are in on it." said Biar, rolling her eyes. "Lana would have been better, she's not as strict as you!" Rhodry laughed heartily. "You wouldn't learn as much for that. After all, your big sister is a bit impatient, you know."
Then the blacksmith was with Pidge and Briar got really nervous. It didn't go at all as she had imagined! She had wanted to shine in front of her father. Elina was grinning next to her. It was easy for her to grin. She also had Isidor to look after, a soul of a Shetland pony. But - didn't it also show a sense of responsibility to ask for help in case of doubt? Briar tried to remember what her uncle had taught her. Yes, yes, it had been clear that if you couldn't help yourself, you should ask for help. Briar sighed and turned. "What's the matter, can't you handle a puny Shetland pony?" sneered Elina, and Briar grumbled. "Shut up. Just because you have a smart mouth and are in charge of an absolute goldendoodle doesn't mean you have to take advantage of it." Elina bristled. Backtalk from Briar? That was unusual. It had never happened before! The relationship between the two cousins had so far consisted of Elina saying something and Briar immediately carrying out the instruction without hesitation. "Oh, I guess the little doll is developing a mind of her own?" scoffed Elina, but Briar ignored her cousin and went to her father. "Dad, please help me with Mi. I don't know what else to do." Smiling mildly, Flan tousled his daughter's hair, knowing full well that she didn't like it at all. "That's my good girl. Can admit when she needs help and doesn't try everything on her own." The side blow went to Elina and judging by her facial expression, she was aware of it. Not that Flan was angry with his niece, but his little brother was not the type to raise children, especially not those with such strong willfulness as Elina. So he felt obliged to intervene once or twice. "Well, let's have a look then, my darling. It would be a laugh if we don't get Muriel to lift her hooves."
