Former german lands isn't Russian territory, Baltic people live there today. About our living space I think it's because in Middle Ages, ancient Slavic tribes were biggest folk in North Asia and they've grown to all sides like wild heather plant, without political idea. So appeared huge state with only 150 millions of people inside. Over 99% of Russia territory even not populated, just wild nature without humans.

Yes, but sadly except big resourses and strong weapons, there is nothing we can brag - because of robbers in government, Russia is retarded in other areas except military and resource extraction system. Living standards here much lower than in South Korea and Far East countries. And its very painful when realise how meny we able to achieve with such big resourses. However, old Russian empire did it right, but Red Plague ruined all. If not the commies, today Russia could look like Japan or Britain. USSR was the biggest political mistake in human history and may be even worst state of whole world.
