Not only is he an astronaut a hero to the public but he earned both the iron cross 1st and second class the former being only capable of being awarded if you first acquired the iron cross 2nd class and both are awarded for bravery and outstanding service in combat. So he's also a war hero in the eyes of the Reich.

I find this possible actually.
They have the rocket technological capability during that time. It's just they used it as weapon against the Allies.
After they lost the war, both US and USSR salvaged their rocket technology, sparking a Space Race between them.
If they've won the war instead, then yes this is likely be possible for them to accomplish.
