I'm a recyclist. A recycling artist. Yeah, fucking lame, I know. But totally not at the same time, 'cause now I HAVE A STAMP!

Anyways, I went to Bonnaroo over the summer. AWESOME, btw. But there was this tent set up by the Academy where they held all these awesome activities, one of which was painting. They handed out huge pieces of cardboard and old signs and such, on which people painted some of the most beautiful masterpieces I have ever seen. That was a catalyst to my new way of thinking: Why buy it if you can make it?

Anyways, I won't bore you with any more details, but here's what I do to be conservative/cheap/green/eco-friendly/whatever. Simply put, a few little things I do to save a few bucks when it comes to my bad habit of being an artist.

Recycling Artist Tips
Canvas --> Cardboard
I use old pieces of cardboard or.. borrowed signs, y'know, like the realty ones on the sides of the road? These both work well, just prime them first, otherwise the cardboard will warp/absorb paint weird and the signs won't hold the paint, it'll scrape off easily. It's free, which is a LOT cheaper than canvas. I only use canvas on very special or professional pieces. The stuff I do casually or for fun is usually on this material. But when I do buy canvas, I get locally done stuff, not Micheal's or Hobby Lobby.

Palette --> Plastic Bottles/Cups
Rather than spending $2 every time I lose/break on of those round plastic palettes with the little wells, I cut off the bottoms of old 2 liter or 20 oz soda bottles. Works just as well and I've got $2 to spend on a kneaded eraser to replace the one I lost with my last palette. And instead of spending $5 on those cute little plastic containers with the lids for individual paint colors, I save up the little plastic dosing cups that come with bottles of pepto and such. Rubber band a wet paper towel around the top, and that keeps the paint damp until you need the paint again.

Brush Rag --> Fast Food Napkins
I don't use a brush rag, I just go through crap-loads of paper towels. So, instead, I decided to save all the crap-loads of napkins I get/receive when I eat fast food.

There's a couple more little things, but my leg is asleep, so I'm done for now. Yes, this is how ghetto I am.
