Continuation from Rescue

"It's strange, Monica, that's all I'm saying."
"The universe is a strange place," my wife reminds me, as we run through the cavern. "Something in particular bothering you?"
Squeezing off a couple of shots, one of those telekinetic tortoises is turned to slag before it can hurl any rocks at us.
I do not like being stoned. Goes back to my youth and I didn't care for it.
"You shouldn't have lost your rifle," I point out.

"Damned boulder smashed it out of my hands," she points out. "But I can still shoot psiblasts."
"Yeah, but for how long?" I ask, scanning ahead. The coast being clear for now. "We all came back from Deneb will greatly reduced power - "
"Except for Meg," Monica reminds me. "Two more, one in front, one in back."
"Take the back," I say, as I blast the one blocking the exit. "Another serving of roast turtle."
"I'll pass," the redhead says as she launches a pair of plasma bolts at the tortoise. It grumbles its displeasure before it falls silent.

"You didn't kill it," I point out. "It would not have spared you."
"This is recon," Monica tells me. "No need. Plus the Empyrean One promotes peace through good will."
"Her power doesn't seem any weaker," I grumble, as we head for the shuttle.
"She is using her power for good and re-instituted democracy."
"With her at the head of the military," I point out. "She has the power and holds all the cards."
"She is Leading the Way to a new era of human prosperity," my wife says, her admiration for Keisha plain. "You're the only one who doesn't see it."
"Did you hear your sister screaming her name in her sleep?"
"Who? Tara?"
"God no," I say, as we jump into the shuttle. Firing up the engines, I add, "Dru would never put up with that."
"Nadia loves the Empyrean One," Monica reminds me. "She erected a statue to her in the common room. And Dru loves her, too."
"I'm not sure how she went from being our biggest enemy to our best wet dream."

"She's using her powers and brilliance for good," Monica says happily. "Deneb taught her that."
"Deneb taught her that she needed to make us think that."
"That's harsh, Nat."
"What's also harsh is that the lizards were happy leaving us alone until Keisha rose to power," I point out. "Seems coincidental that a threat requiring her response conveniently appeared for her."

"Don't tall like that," she says, as I pilot the orbiter off the surface, heading for the upper atmosphere. "No bogeys."
"You didn't accept her invitation, did you?"
"Of course, I did," she says, her voice suggesting I must be crazy. "The dinner and sleepover was addressed to both of us."
"So you can scream her name in person."
"Don't be jealous, Sweetie," Monica says, squeezing my hand. "You are my beloved. But no one in their right mind turns down a night with a Goddess."
"I must not be in my right mind."
"The planet's secure," the redhead tells me. "No lizards."
"Waste of time."
"The Empyrean One said we needed to make sure," Monica says brightly. "And you'll see. She'll get you to scream her name, too."
"We'll see."
