Cool. How long do you spend on a painting? I really like your style, but I just can't seem to do anything like it. Can you give me any tips?

about 16 hours i guess, but I was really slow back in the days, and was practically starting over from scratch for a few times cuz of failing...
as for tips - i dunno, my stuff looks like shit to me, always, so can't get any real tips prolly, except from doing reference studies from life, or movie shots, or photos

Hmm, that's long. I usually only use 4 to 5 hours. As for tips: for example what kind of tools do you use? Do you paint it all grey and then use gradients? Etc. Would greatly appreciate it if you bothered to tell me a little bit about how you paint.

Yeah I was pretty slow on those ones, and was experimenting a lot (failed lol)
Well, usually I do no line art (on personal stuff cuz I'm too lazy, and for work cuz of constant lack of time), starting directly with blocking out main shapes. Sometimes I'm blocking general silhouettes in greyscale, but generally i'm trying to start adding color as early as possible. This is because when I'm trying to color more or less finished greyscale image - it turns out to be really bleached and dull looking in the end, so I end up just repainting everything on top of it, which is a bit frustrating.
As for tools - I'm using selections a lot lately, especially for hard-surface stuff, and trying to keep silhouettes separated on layers, so I can easily select them. For brushes - i'm mostly using plain round soft and hard brushes, and a few texture brushes - one for random small scratchy dots, and one made of photoshop's standard chalk brush. I'm also using a pencil tool sometimes to add some crisp edges. I'm overlaying some textures occasionally, but I'm trying to keep it to minimum on late stages now, cuz it gives the picture this really recognizable overtextured fake look, that I don't really like. I've used color balance and brightness\contrast adjustments a lot in the past, but trying to keep it to minimum now, again cuz it gives that really fake look.
Sometimes I'm doing a rough 3d model in maya to paint on top of, especially for technical stuff. I'm using maya, cuz for most time at work i'm supposed to do 3d, so i know maya, but some people in our studio are using modo or sketchup for the same purpose. Sketchup is pretty easy to learn (at least I think so) and might help a lot with environments and any kinds of hard surface stuff, where you have to deal with complex perspective cases a lot.
Also, few tips: try using almost completely opaque brushes (like 90% opacity), this might help to keep your colors fresh. Thing is that in RGB mode in photoshop when you paint with low opacity brush (say 50%) you lose saturation on both the color you paint with, and the one you paint on. Say you paint with 30% saturation yellow on top of 30% saturation blue - you get 20% saturation color in the end. Thats why when people are painting with transparent brushes a lot - their images have this really washed out look and shitty color transitions.
You can also try using LAB image mode - it keeps color saturation when blending transparent brushes, but it doesn't work with some of the blending modes (like overlay).
In overall my work process is pretty much close to one Craig Mullins describes here [link] only I'm using selections a lot more, and suck at painting unlike him lol
