FOR SALE: [link]I AM NEVER MAKING SCRATCH AGAIN. THOSE GLASSES AAAAUUUUGGGG. DX Ok maybe I would make her again, but I had SO MUCH trouble with the glasses. These are the sixth try!
I had a lot of trouble dyeing her hair too, because I didn't have the right color of dye at first.She's larger than the other ponies I've made, with the exception of the Luna doll I'm still working on. She's about six inches at the tips of her ears. You can see more pics on the eBay link, one which shows her with a G4 Fluttershy for reference. I'm pretty pleased with how she turned out. Her posing ability is good and her coat is soft. Her hair is brushable like all my ponies, made from Suri alpaca which I combed, dyed, cut, and styled myself. I love Suri, but it takes a little extra effort to get it to dye properly, and I didn't have any good blues on hand! Eventually, after many tries, I got the color I wanted, even if I would have preferred it to be a bit more saturated. There are a few strands of angelina fiber in both her mane and her tail, which add some shine and interest. This version of her glasses was made by painting on some fabric that was attached to felt with fusible web. I'm not even going to relate all the misadventures I had with that! But here's a tip for others: Iron-on transfers and fusible web don't like each other. >.>; The glasses hold their shape (and therefore stay on Scratch's face fairly well) because they're coated with several layers of Mod Podge Dimensional Magic. Her coat is a blend of superfine merino and Huacaya alpaca, which is why she's fuzzier than my other ponies. She's also softer as a result, though. Her eyes are printed onto special fabric, so they're crisp and well defined. I don't really like working with that kind of fabric though, it's very stiff and it's hard to felt through it, so I doubt I'll use it in the future. For people that want printed eyes, I'll use a different material, such as iron-ons on standard cotton fabric.

If you're in the US, I recommend Living Felt as a good place to get some materials to start with. They have a good selection of different needles, wool, and foam mats. Regardless of where you shop, get 38 star needles if you can. They felt much more rapidly than triangles. For wool, what's called "core wool" felts rapidly and is good for making a core to overlay prettier fiber over. Living Felt also sells Merino cross batts, which are a bit pricy but felt very nicely and are good for starting out. They aren't very soft, but generally softer fibers take a lot more effort to felt anyway. Leave the specialty needles and fibers for later.

She's needle felted. I used loose wool, and a specially designed needle to poke the wool into shape.

I do have some more tutorials planned, though I don't plan to do a basic felting tutorial. Felting isn't so much about technique as it is skill. In other words, you just have to know the basic concept (stab the wool!) and then just do it. There are plenty of basic tutorials out there already. I've already done a tutorial about rooting hair, and one for my method of making armatures. I still want to make one about making posable figures more flexible, and one about using an armature (which is very simple to do, but hard to describe properly).

XD I actually haven't yet felted anything that wasn't an animal, except for the mushroom pin cushion. I've never been good with inorganic things anyway, and felting doesn't lend itself well to sharp angles, unless you're *GlassCamel .

Thanks! I mentioned in a previous comment that I have trouble thinking of good poses for my posable figures' photo shoots. I'm glad to hear you like this one!
As for how I got the proportions, it's generally easier (I think, anyway) to get felt to be the shape you want, as opposed to traditional sewn plushes. It's like modeling clay, if something's not right you just add more or take some away. Usually I just squish the wool down rather than cut some off if there's too much in an area, though. I also use printed or drawn images of the character I'm making as a reference. So far I've only made figures that were small enough to have full-scale reference images, so I can just hold the figure up to my picture and adjust things until they match pretty well. You can kind of see what I mean in this mini tutorial I did about armatures: [link] I used that drawing both for the armature and for the proportions of that figure. For Scratch I used a print out of a generic pony base shape, from the Pony Generator. My normal style isn't quite as exaggerated as the FiM style, so if I don't check my references often the proportions end up way off, which is what happened to the first felted pony I made. XD

I actually have to try not to felt things into fuzzy rocks! XD Most of the time that's a good thing, but on things like legs that I want to move I've had to experiment a bit. I've done several ponies with polyester batting wrapper around their armature, that keeps the middle of the legs soft so they can pose, but it's kind of annoying to do. Recently though, I got some crown tip needles for surface finishing and found that they're great for making things with soft cores, since they only felt the surface. The Luna doll I'm making has posable legs that work by having only the surface fibers felted firmly, and the middle is still soft. Much faster and less irritating than the old method!

Not a dumb question at all! Needle felting by hand is a relatively new craft (started in the 80s). It's a process of locking wool fibers together using a specially made needle to poke the fibers into place. You can make practically anything with it. I like it because the result is a plush with no seams, and no sewing. I'm pretty bad at sewing. XD Do a search on dA for "needle felt", there are a bunch of awesome felting artists here! That's how I got into it.
