At her previous barn, Marlo had shared a pasture with a very old, quiet gelding, and though the girls suspected introducing the placid mare to the herd would be as easy as throwing her right into their midst, they decided to pasture her with just Emma for a few days. They hoped that the friendly thoroughbred and flashy paint would take a shine to one another, allowing Marlo to go into the new herd with a friend already in the bag.

It... sort of worked. Emma was completely nuts about her new friend, constantly embracing her and trying to entice her to play. Marlo put up with the thoroughbred's shenanigans without so much as an ear-pin, but personifying or not, Anita swore the paint looked positively long-suffering.

"I don't know who I feel more sorry for." Amy snorted on the third afternoon, watching Marlo drift across the pasture with a perky eared Emma following in her shadow.
