If your paper ends up bending within itself, your paper may be too thin. A trick I like to do is when i'm folding it, make sure the folds aren't too hard, i'm making a crease, but not completely squishing it down.

If you don't have the paper, you can use the lined paper you use for writing.
The lines and the length is about the same size. :]
