i fell in love with the little gray cat on the front stoop.
            he purred and purred, rubbing at my ankles;
            impatiently flicking his white-tipped tail and meowing at my shoelaces.

i fell in love with the wool top hat the man wore.
            if i lived in the eighteenth century, i could see my father having one just like it.
            i could picture myself, not nearly six, climbing on his black pantleg and asking to wear it.
            it's too big for me.
            the brim falls over my eyes.

i fell in love with the green cornfield next to the road.
            i watched the wind ripple through the strong emerald stalks and the sunlight glance off their waxy leaves.
            i remember the faint woosh sound of the wind in the rows.
