You might want to try the brightness/contrast, levels trick to make the colors pop.

As much as people complain about scanners killing color, I don't think much can be done about it. The process of scanning is dragging one big BEAM 'O LIGHT across the image, so quality is bound to be lost until something is invented that doesn't require harsh lighting.

That said: Omg those characters. I have fondness for that owl's flat face and I can't really put my finger on why.

Thanks! I was kind of seesawing over how I wanted to paint them, but I really just ended up kind of mottling the paint in some parts and making dots in others.
