Description Something I did for the recent 100th anniversary of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, a silent German-Expressionist film that was released in the Weimar Republic in 1920. We’ve reached the point in which pioneering motion pictures are now being commemorated on their centennials, and we recognize the impact they’ve had on art and culture since their premiers. In the case of Robert Wiene’s Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari, we have a piece of cinema that pretty much invented the horror genre of film, and a work that continues to influence artists to this day – if you don’t believe me, just look at any of Tim Burton’s movies.

Absolutely. More powerful in its way than many modern movies. We'll have to wait a dozen years for the centennial of Tod Browning's Freaks.

They did some weird and wondrous films back then--first of a new genre.
