I was thinking about what I should draw for the ATG event over at Equestria Daily, then I thought of this picture and had to draw this:

Her huge amazing wings make up for the scrawny ones as a filly.

But this is nice.

I'm not even sure what I like anymore, heh. Been doing radically different styles lately.
But it's great to hear that you like this style, because at the moment I'm loving this one as well.

You should try out a few things with and maybe stick to it if you still like that way.
Imo sketchy looks good in general. Much more energetic.

Definitely gonna try this more, it's been on my to-do list for a while, but somehow forgot about it until I saw this sketch.
The only thing I don't really like about it is that it somehow feels like cheating to use textures like this...And I'm not sure how to make texturised stuff myself.

In a way it is "cheating", yeah. You do use the atmosphere of another artist's picture and build that into your own image. But why the hell not? There've been whole art eras of only copying. Look at Andy Warhol for example.
It's officially accepted to use those textures as an upgrade to a picture that's already good. A bad picture won't look better if you'd texturise it. Using those is just a way of composition or design, like using a filter or a specific brush.
Yes, you can create your own texture designs, but why would you? There are already many of them out there free available for everyone, we don't really need more of them. And, let's be honest, you and me, we won't be able to create better ones without much time of practice.

SmockHobbes In reply to Face-of-Moe [2012-06-26 20:29:12 +0000 UTC]
Thanks for your comment, you made me feel a lot better about using those textures. I guess that in the end, it is indeed the same as using a brush, just that it's a bit more obvious.
I'll still be careful with using them too much though, because I'd still like my drawing to be as original as possible. As long as it adds something to the picture though, I guess it's alright ^^

Face-of-Moe In reply to SmockHobbes [2012-06-26 20:58:45 +0000 UTC]
Healthy way of thinking. Sun, I am proud.
My choice: Try to not use them at all. There is no problem with making use of already existing textures, but you won't get any better at designing/drawing if you use them. Every texture is an experience you never had and a chance for improvement you missed.

SmockHobbes In reply to Face-of-Moe [2012-06-26 21:06:12 +0000 UTC]
Hmm, not necessarily... Textures can make a nice addition as something that I would normally just skip. I just have to make sure that I don't overdo them, or I have to try to search for alternatives.
I'm not interested in making textures, so to be honest I'd rather not spend time in practicing those. I'd rather put that time in practicing lineart and maybe other styles of drawing

Face-of-Moe In reply to SmockHobbes [2012-06-26 21:19:40 +0000 UTC]
Oh, I guess you misunderstood me. What I was trying to say is: Everytime you use a texture you don't think about a proper background. I myself find good backgrounding - or at least good surrounding - quite difficult.
Or everytime you use a texture you skip practice of drawing vein, stones, etc.
All these things you usually use textures for. All those things are stuff you can still get better at.

SmockHobbes In reply to Face-of-Moe [2012-06-26 21:59:12 +0000 UTC]
Backgrounds are something I could use a lot of practice in, but I never really feel like doing them, and when I do, I dislike the drawing because of it. Although it is true that textures are often used as a background, like in this drawing...It isn't necessarily the case. Sometimes you can use it to get a texture on the pony itself, or even over a drawn background.
I could try that sometime, maybe I'll actually bother with a background, then ^^

I know what you mean, can't really stand backgrounds as well. But both of us have to learn how to draw them properly some day. And by that I mean "not ruin the picture with it".
