Jesus, the first encounter with her was probably one of the most terrifying moments in any game for me. O.o

Oh she scared me... that hospital was scary in general!

When it comes to horror games, there's just no better setting than a hospital. I mean, the smell of death, surgical equipment, bleak hallways, just makes for a depressing and disturbing atmosphere. This day in age, they're just commonplace in horror games. But the Miyata Clinic in Siren, there's something about that one in particular that makes it downright terrifying that you feel absolutely helpless... Probably because you are most of the time. xD

Hospitals and hotels. Do you know the movie The Shining? Can you imagine them making a game out of that? The crap you experience either in the book or the movie? (The Jack Nicholson movie- not the one with Steven Webber in it) but I agree... a lot of horrific ideas spring from hospitals I mean, hospitals in a normal setting breed all sorts of terrible ideas, look how many deaths happen, how much violence and suffering. Hospitals, Hotels and Prisons. yeah... breeding grounds for awesome horror ideas!

Ooh, The Shining! >.< That's such a coincidence you mentioned that, I'm actually reading that at the moment (such a creepy book!) I loved the classic Stanley Kubrick film! *_* That's one classy old horror movie!

Yeah! Hospitals are just so unsettling for all the reasons we touched upon! I guess with hospitals, they're also a place tragedy what with all the death. Hotels and prisons can be the same too! Hehe.

Speaking of prisons, you mentioned the idea of a game based on The Shining? Well, one of the things I love about the storytelling in modern games is that a lot games are heavily influenced by classic cinema. Have you ever heard of The Suffering? Midway's old entry in the survival-genre, it was heavily inspired by The Shining, and it was set in a haunted prison.

LOL that is an excellent book! I absolutely love it! have you read it before or is it your first time? You want to read a freaky book, read The Exorcist. OMG... scary stuff!
I love that movie The Shining. No one could pull off Jack Torrence like Nicholson... he is a master!
Oh yeah, I know that a lot of games draw inspiration from authors like Koontz, King, Saul and the like... like the true horror story writers. I love Stephen King and Dean Koontz. I have and owned The Suffering. For some reason I could not get into that game. Maybe if I tired to play it again, I would better appreciate it. But when I first did I was like 'meh'... LOL

I've been reading The Shining for a number of years now, but no, it's actually my first time reading. In fact, I got a little one-on-one book club going with another good friend of mine here on DA, so we're essentially reading it together, hehe, it makes it more fun. C: I've never heard of the book called The Exorcist, but I'm assuming famous 1973 horror class of the same name is based on the book? Either way, the idea of exorcism is very frightening, so I'm sure it's a great, scary read!

Oh absolutely, Jack Nicholson portrays the angry, temperamental characters so well, and his facial expressions are just priceless! Gotta love Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance!

I was actually interested to hear that Silent Hill 4 took inspiration from novels such as Coin Locker Babies and the House of Leaves, I heard both were very terrifying stories! O_o Wow, I'm surprised to hear you've played The Suffering! It's kinda niche, especially now since it's an older game. I can understand why you couldn't get into it; I actually played the sequel "Ties That Bind" first, absolutely loved it, and knew that I'd just love the first one. So unless you have that kinda drive to play a game like that, it's really hard to get into initially (I was actually that way at first with the original Siren, but we all know how that turned out! ). You should give The Suffering another chance, it's well worth it for a horror fan such as yourself! In my opinion, that's American-style survival horror at its finest!

Oh the movie is based on the book of The Exorcist... oh dear lord... if you have seen the movie... and enjoyed/thought it was scary, then you need to read the fucking book. Its 10 times more scary. I had nightmares after I read it, and that... my friend, is saying something because it usually takes a LOT to rattle me and... I never get that scared over a book.
I have never heard of those novels. Must investigate! XD
yeah I tried to play it... but I don't know where or when I was like "meh". maybe another game came out at the same time that drew my attention more than that but all I know is I hears an inmate in the beginning call another inmate a 'baby raping, sodomizing something or other' or something like that and it soured my stomach (that and all the racial crap) but I can watch and handle everything in the SH games. go figure... But I do like the idea behind the main character Tork? is that his name?
I loved Siren when I first started playing partly because it reminded me of SH.
Oh... you twisted my arm, I will have to borrow it from my nephew. He is the only one who has it. I actually bought it and then gave it to him cuz I was like 'okay... had enough of that' XD what I did like was the gas chamber ghost.

I shouldn't be surprised that the classic film was based on a book, it seems that way with a lot of those older movies. xD But I really loved the movie, I found it to be very creepy, so I'm definitely gonna have to check out the book soon. C:

House of Leaves is a really weird book! I heard it's one of the scariest out there. My friend actually showed me her copy, and that book does some really bizarre stuff that messes with the reader. O.o

Yup, the original Suffering actually takes a little while before it really picks up. I guess with all the disgusting trash talk you'd hear in prison is supposed to set the mood, you know, let the player know they're in a very oppressive environment where you can only trust yourself. After all, Darwin's theory of natural selection plays a prominent role in the game's story. I definitely, Torque is a very neat character! (yeah, that was his name ). I guess he's kinda similar to James Sunderland in regards to having a strong connection to what's going on around him. Furthermore, he's one of the most badass characters in any survival horror game I've played. Like I said, American-style survival horror at its finest! Plenty of action, but really creepy.^^

Hehe, I agree! I think that's what got me hooked on Siren was that it was like Silent Hill in a Japanese setting (you know some of the original developers from Team Silent were involved in the production of Siren? ).

Alright! Hope you get a chance to check out The Suffering soon! Yeah, it's probably better that you borrow it first and see what you think. Just give it some time, it will get better. Ooh, I can't remember that character's name, but that ghost was so creepy. The worst is when he finally tries to kill you towards the end. >.<

I have actually just got House of Leaves and am about to read it! I got it, just to tell you, because you said it was a good book! when I read it, I will let you know what I think and we can chat about that too and how it ties to Silent Hill 4 LOL

Oooh. I may have to retry it... you are certainly doing a good job at better selling it, but if I can get myself past all the things that did sort of bug me I guess I can enjoy the game better.
Like I said, I liked the idea and this was coming off the high I was having with Silent Hill so I thought it looked just as good.

Aww, I'm flattered you went out and bought that book because of my recommendation!^^ I really hope you enjoy it! I still need to pick it up soon, hehe (don't know if I made it clear or not, but I haven't actually read it myself xP).

Looks like you and I are all about the survival-horror huh? >8D Well, we've covered Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Clock Tower, Siren, and now the Suffering. Tell me, what do you think of the Fatal Frame series? (seriously, as a gamer, friends like you and me are a match made in heaven! <3)
