Description Howdy. here.

As we're getting back into the swing of this project, I thought I'd try my hand at a bit of 3D artwork. Did a test model of a pair of mechanical sligpants from the 2D reference pictures on the Oddworld website. Getting the pistons to function in 3DS Max was fun, if not rather tricky.

The animation may appear a bit jerky at this distance, but bear in mind the character is going to be rather small when he's in-game, so a lot of large movements will be required.

Will add some more detail to the model, and the engine round the back. In terms of scratches and rust-marks, I'll leave that for the bump maps and texturing process.

Let us know your thoughts. ^^

I like this--I think it has a good sense of weight and it "feels" right when you compare it to the published Slig walks.

I did always like the slig walks form the 2D games, but the 3D ones did look too smooth. we're aiming for clunky but adequate runs and walks for these guys.

I don't consider the sligs from "Munch" canon.  In fact, I like to forget Munch was ever made (sad, but true! -- his design's great, but 1) sligs with sticks will never be my canon, and 2) the gameplay is too loosey-goosey for a series whose trademark was dime-accurate movement.  "Stranger's Wrath", on the other hand...that was great.  But I digress!)

Thanks! There will be more to come, along with the slig itself is in the works!

That's actually pretty good. It looks from this angle like you've got everything moving that should, the axle at the waist is rotating with the leg movement, the pistons are going up and down as appropriate, the weird little feet are movng appropriately to the walk cycle. Having taken animation classes myself I'd say that this is really good for a game or non-realistic animation. If you want it to be "real" in the sense that Beowulf's animation was "real" then there's definitely more work to do, but it's a great start.

We totally agree, we'll certainly take that advice on board. We're both animation students so any critique is always welcome.
