I really like dynamic of these two characters in the series, I know I always kind of read too much into series like these (when I start to go on about in depth character Analysis, people are usually like 'or.. they're just there to shoot zombies and have breasts.') but hear me out!
I feel like Saya's feelings for Kohta are shaped around the fact that she sees a lot of her flaws in him. The two are fairly different but both are, well, nerds. Saya is just on the 'I'm smart, hot and have money' side of nerd, and Kohta isn't (although training in america isn't cheap so maybe I'm wrong). Neither of them really seemed to have any strong connections to people before the outbreak, Kohta getting teased and Saya bitterly bitching out anyone who came near her. However, once the outbreak happened, the one who has power is no longer Saya, it's Kohta. Saya is the one who is useless, her smarts and social status mean next to nothing (though she is still an expert strategist, she has none of her own means of defending herself). Kohta is now the one in power. Yet, just like Saya, he has nothing still REALLY but his love of guns, just like Saya's background only really served to make her bitter and angry. Both of them need something, something that's partially found in Alice for Saya, and in Guns for Kohta, but obviously (as illustrated in the mall arc) this isn't enough for either of them. The two sort of need each other, but they don't REALLY have each other due to the weird power dynamic, and their lack of a truely canon love interest is what will slowly drive them insane in their post-apocalyptic world.
