Description 'Forgive the insubordination, but this old friend has an order for you. Go out there and give them hell. You were born to do this.'

After I finished Samara, quite a few people wanted to see Garrus next. So here he is! He was very fun to do, though those scars were pretty tricky. Part of the enjoyment came from doing all the textures and the lighting... but mostly I enjoyed it because, well, it's Garrus. You got to love the guy.

Drew this with a biro pen. I'm sorry that I cut off part of his fringe and mandibles, but it was the only way to make him fit the paper...
More of these portraits are on the way!

I'm so happy you like it! These biro drawings take an unbelievable amount of time so it's really wonderful to know people enjoy them.
Thanks so much for the wonderful comments, and the badges and the watch!

Have I ever mentioned that you are a goddess and I secretly worship you? Ah, well, probably I have.

Actually, everything I had to say was said before me, but I tell you what. I'm going to start using (and learning) oil, got supplies after all the years dreaming, and I see an oil painting in my head: Garrus, quite a small canvas, perfectly detailed, mild shading. You got in pen what I want to get in oil, so, whenever I create him, I think I'll dedicate him to you. After all, you got me ME, so I think it'd be fair.

I hope this picture didn't required much calibrations.

Don't worship me, I'd make a very bad god. You'd never get a day off, for starters. (Casual Doctor Who reference. ) I'm so glad you like this!
Ooh, I'd love to see that... I can't wait. Best of luck learning how to use oils, and with creating a Garrus painting!
Hehe, when people tried to speak to me while I was drawing this, I did usually respond by telling them to wait for a minute, because I was in the middle of calibrations.

I love this:the shadows and all the little details give the effect of a 3d painting and it's really amazing! My favourite part is the jaw and its texture.I'm happy you draw him too,he's my favourite space husband!  Great work!

Thanks so much, it's wonderful that you like it! I'm especially glad you like the jaw because that was one of my favourite parts to do. And hehe, everyone loves Garrus. While my FemShep's heart always belonged to Kaidan, Garrus is definitely wonderful as either space husband or space bro, he's just so much fun to have around. Hardly surprising that he was dead fun to draw too.

That jaw is amazing!
I start the romance with Kaidan in ME1 but then I decided to  romance Garrus in ME2-3 to add drama:my Shepard didn't take well how Kaidan treated her in ME2 and found new love with Garrus ,but then in ME3 she and Kaidan clear the air and became best friend forever.  I add the drama with a happy ending. Maybe next time I will continue the romance with Kaidan because he seems really sweet(and hot).

Gotta have happy endings, right?
I think romancing Garrus would have taken my FemShep a bit out of character, since she’s quite serious and quiet, which makes Kaidan pretty much a perfect match for her. I’m sure I will romance Garrus some day though, how can I resist a loveable turian? And I definitely recommend doing the full Kaidan romance at some point, it’s very touching.

omgoodnessWOW!!! This is friggin amazing!! I was already in awe, but when I zoomed in....I was simply blown away by the most delicate, flawless crosshatching I've ever seen! The lighting on his crest spines, and in his eyes, the perfectly graded shadows with their blackest blacks and subtle curves.... I am so impressed! D What an amazing portrait! (Plus, it's Garrus- so, an even bigger high-five)
Also, you did an incredible job on those scars....I can imagine that was easy! I'm so glad Norroendyrd linked me this masterpiece! I might've gone on with life without such a treat!

Wow, I cannot thank you enough for this lovely feedback, I wish I could properly express how happy it makes me! Since you are a master of hand-drawn art yourself, it means a lot to me. The lighting on the crest spines was probably the hardest part, actually, it was a bit of a challenge trying to make them look 3D, so I'm glad you think they turned out nicely!
Those scars were tricky, but so very fun. And yeah, there's no not loving Garrus.  Thanks again!

Wow, I think you've really outdone yourself on this one! He looks almost 3D! I have always been in awe of pen artwork and how all those little pen strokes shape the texture! And the level of detail is stunning! It's been such a joy seeing you branch out into visual art, and vastly improve yourself over such a short period of time!

Thank you so, so much! These drawings do take a long time, but it's so worth it to see all the marks coming together to make the shape and texture - and to get such wonderful feedback. I just hope I continue to improve!

Yay, Garrus! With a fitting expression for the vigilante. I wonder when I'll see that quote at the top of your description

I wonder if his scars will ever heal. It feels kind of unfair since the ones Shepard gets at the beginning of ME2 can be gone halfway through the game or so. He also doesn't seem to like fixing or changing that mangled piece of armor - but maybe the alternate outfit doesn't have the banged up bits anymore, I haven't checked yet.

Anyway amazing job with the biro sketch as usual! I feel like a broken record, but you've gone well beyond what I would be able to critique XD

Skyflower51 In reply to Vara-Nara [2016-04-03 07:16:01 +0000 UTC]

Glad you like him! His expression was fun to do, it's surprising how expressive a creature whose face is made up of inflexible plates can look. And it's a great moment when that quote comes up, I'm sure it'll warm your heart as much as it did mine.
Well, this is a picture of his ME3 appearance, so as you can see by then his face is still pretty mangled. There's a point where Doctor Chakwas says she could try to fix the scars, but she thinks Garrus actually likes them, so it seems he could have them healed, but he doesn't because he thinks they look cool... which would be very like him.
Aw, thank you, that means a lot to me!

AAAaaAAAaaaAAAh...Did I ever make myself clear on just how much in awe I am of them biro sketches???? At some point I might need to commission you...
From afar, those scars look amazingly real. How did Gallus Garrus get them?
Up close, the detail is breathtaking. I wish I could get closer still...

Question: how do you make those blue-coloured links to your older pieces?

Skyflower51 In reply to ShoutFinder [2016-04-03 07:09:47 +0000 UTC]

Aw, thanks so much! It means a lot to me to know that the work pays off. And wow, if you ever wanted to, I'd be happy to rise to the challenge... though maybe not for any human/elven faces until I've figured out how to do them.
Garrus gets the scars when a rocket missile glances off the side of his face - leading to comments from his fellow crewmembers along the lines of, 'Hey, Garrus! What's the hardest part about treating a turian who took a rocket to the face?' 'Let me guess, figuring out which side took the rocket?' And heh, yeah, I've mixed him and Gallus up a few times to. Guess it's what happens when multiple works of fiction decide they want to give a species Roman-sounding names...
Ah, OK, sometimes just copying and pasting the links into the description makes them show up as the Deviation name, but only sometimes. (Don't ask me why.) If it doesn't, I copy the Deviation title (so for this one, I'd copy where it says 'Garrus Vakarian - Biro Portrait' in big letters) into Word, shrink the letters, and then copy and paste them into the description, making sure to keep the hyperlink. There's probably an easier way to do it, but that's how I go about it. I hope that makes sense!

Hmm. I would love to see your take on dear ol' Nevada, but maybe after you get the hang of them human faces, eh? They really are a pain to draw, sometimes.

Poor Garrus. But it's great to see his crewmembers have a sense of humour.

Well, only one way to find out if I get it or not, eh? Thanks very much for that!

Skyflower51 In reply to ShoutFinder [2016-04-04 07:07:33 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, Nevada would be interesting - I've definitely learned from drawing Garrus that scars are a lot of fun. When my exams are over, I'll probably be drawing a lot of things, and I'm sure I could make Nevada one of them.
No problem, I hope it helps!
