Description The 15 ton Sheridan was called by the US Army an Armored Airborne Reconaissance Assault Vehicle, or what would have formerly been known as a light tank. It was put into service in 1967 and sent to Viet Nam where its aluminum armor developed a reputation for being easily penetrated by heavy machine gun rounds, not to mention RPGs. Its swan song was in a limited role in Operation Desert Storm in 1991. The Sheridan could be transported by C-130 and C-141 aircraft. Its 152mm gun could fire conventional explosive and AP rounds but its trump card was the $88,000 MGM-51 Shillelagh anti-tank missile with its 17,000 foot range, infrared guidance and 2,630 mph speed.

Fun fact: I volunteer at this museum. the Sheridan is probably my favorite tank there. The only problem is the flotation screen is in bad shape, there's some rust inside, I'm not sure if we still have the escape hatch under the driver's seat, and the commander's seat is almost non-existent. But it runs fine! We had it in a Memorial Day Parade earlier this week.

I learned today that, while it looks bad, it runs great.
