What's the deal with reality TV shows on a educational channel? It's so obviously staged on some shows, it makes me cringe...

I used to love ANIMAL planet... I used to watch it WAAY back in the early 00s As a Kid. I used to LOVE catching Animal Face off... the most Extreme, Meerkat Manor... Animal Cops.. Animal Miracles... the whole She-bang!
When they added Pitbulls and PArolees I loved it because it focused on ANIMALS. and same with Too cute!
but Animal planet I hate now... Especially Treehouse masters, Tanked, Wild west alaska????? SERIOUSLY?? where are my EFFING ANIMALS?? :L
another network that i only turn it to catch a couple of good shows but that's it ::T I wonder if they still do Dogs 101.. which was awesome.
Cartoon Network .... with live action shows???? :L Mtv.... not even focusing on Music?? These networks need to live up to their name...

Agreed.
My family didn't have a television, so when I had to come to my mom's office, I'd go hang in the break room eating graham crackers and watching Animal Planet. The edgiest thing I ever watched was a brief, interesting series about cryptids, and my all time favorite was the tv show dedicated to how a NY woman would love her dogs and take them on adventures (based on the dog's viewpoint). It was fun, it was cute, and it was my favorite thing in the whole wide world, short of PBS's "Arthur".
I even asked a grocery store Santa for my very own "public television" so I could watch the Animal Planet!
I went to a fine arts convention recently, and being in a hotel room that had a tv (over 10 years and family still doesn't own one, haha), I was really excited about watching Animal Planet again! ...Only to find that it wasn't anything like what I remembered, and that some of the content I was actually uncomfortable watching because it was so "aggressive".
Thankfully, the convention was during Discovery Channel's "Shark Week", so I was able to get my animal television fix. Still, it's sad to see a lot of television channels switching to more violent "adult" content just for the sake of ratings. Animal Planet wasn't broke, so it didn't need to be "fixed".

When I was little, I'd go downstairs and curl up on the couch and just watch Animal Planet for hours... My favourite show was The Most Xtreme, but there were a lot of others that I loved. Eventually I really got into reading and I stopped watching, and when I came back to watch it again I found all of these shows that are more about hunting and killing animals. It was really upsetting, because I'd spent so long hating the thought of hunting with all of my heart and boom, everything I'd been protesting was now being promoted on my favourite channel. I miss the old Animal Planet. :/

I totally agree with this. I remember watching animal documentaries and shows like The Most Extreme. They were part of my childhood. Now Animal Planet is completely ruined. Shows such as Treehouse Masters have absolutely nothing to do with animals!

I tried to give it a chance when they started that sloagan, naively thinking that maybe they'd just show how well animals and humans can connect and how similar we really are. I liked some of the reality shows they had, like the ones showing pit bulls in a great light, further emphasizing that if you treat them right, they're some of the best dogs ever. I let River Monsters go. I don't like the idea that the guy tries to catch them, but at least it shows people what could be out there. Hillbilly Handfishing... I have no idea what they were trying to do with that. But if they are going to full-out hunting, I believe they've gone to far. It's bad enough my kids won't watch the cute shows. XD But now I don't know if I can let them watch the channel at all. Everytime I've turned it over there lately, it's one of those shows where an animal snaps and attacks someone, or gets badly hurt, or it's Animal Cops. All the cute shows come on when they're sleeping. What the heck? :/

I actually do not have qualms with their hunting shows, so long as they aren't showing people who hunt endangered species with bs special permits, since I learned after moving to the South that many hunters do eat what they kill

You know, I understand humans themselves are animals, but that doesn't mean that humanity has to be the center of the universe. Being a major animal lover, I am very aggravated with what Animal Planet has been doing in the past few years, it's basically become more about humanity, with animals being pushed to the side.
When I was a kid, I would watch AP every morning if there was nothing else on, and they would have all sorts of nature documentaries and interesting shows, nowadays they show reality shows that often either focus on animal cruelty, fishermen, or most commonly, have nothing to do with animals whatsoever, and when they DO show animal programming, it's usually about domestic pets such as Cats and Dogs, which are sadly, the most watchable programming they have now, but I want to see shows about wild animals and nature, not strictly peoples pets, but at least shows like "Cats 101" are actually ABOUT animals.
Fortunately, there's National Geographic Wild (or NatGeo Wild for short), which is all animals, all the time, basically, it's what Animal Planet USED to be. Still, there's more Animal based programming on Animal Planet then there is Science Fiction on the Sci-Fi Channel (or as they call it now, "Syfy"), but that's a different topic

Aw man I know how you feel... I hate how they have this show about a guy who captures snakes and they demonize them so much in it. Like people already have a hard time with snakes and now you have to make a shot of a ball python in a playground where its presumed that it will 'harm your kids' ITS MORE LIKELY TO BE ONE OF THE KIDS PETS. Yeah its pretty sad that animal planet isn't about animals, it was my favorite program when I was a kid because I loved watching all these amazing animals and where they lived and what was special about them.
but yeah it is sad that this happened to it...

Your preachin' to the choir XD
Along with the five billion other people that commented on this journal, I agree wholeheartedly on the matter. I grew up with The Most Extreme, Wild Kingdom, Animal Precinct, The Planets Funniest Animals and The Crocodile Hunter etc... and later they made Meerkat Mannor and that was a good show too. Now their tv lineup sucks and is mostly reality tv, which I cant stand since its basically on every channel. They used to show The Dog Whisperer, which I personally love that show, but now they don't even have that.
Some of there better shows would have to be Tanked (I love fish, and I like how you get to see the whole tank building process while learning a quite a bit about fish), River Monsters (As much as I love fish, I like to go fishing as well :'D This show is also somewhat educational), Animal Cops (I've been watching these since I was little and I have a lot of respect for people who go out and help rescue animals from abusive or unfortunate situations) and I suppose the shows Fatal Attractions and Animal Hoarding are good to have on the channel. A lot of people dont realize wild animals need to stay in the wild, Fatal Attractions helps to endorse that. Animal Hoarders probably just alerts people to the fact that animal hoarding is actually a very common thing and how terrible it is, especially for the animals.
The worst in the lineup has to be Treehouse Masters (This has nothing to do with animals :I ), Ice Cold Gold (Once again, no animals),Top Hooker (I haven't actually seen this, I just think they could have picked a better name, if you know what I mean), Catfishin' Kings (just no), Finding Bigfoot (not gonna lie, this is pretty funny to watch just for the sheer stupidity of it), The Haunted (I love ghost shows as much as the next person, but why is this on animal planet?), Hillbilly Handfishin' (Kinda the same as the catfish show), Rattlesnake Republic (just another stupid reality show~) and Wildwest Alaska (I live in the country, I hunt, but I find this show just absolutely retarded. I'm also against steel trapping animals because I find that cruel) And along with what you said, Its animal planet! Its supposed to be about respecting animals and getting to learn about them, not killing them. That should be on the hunting channels.
I watch a lot of Nat Geo Wild now, its all about animals and they still have The Dog Whisperer and animal documentaries ^^ I do wish animal planet would sort out its priorities and just go back to All animals, all the time. It is called "Animal" Planet, after all.

I guess it's all for the money and not about the animal lovers and the audience. They just wanna keep up with where the media is going and if they don't they get left behind which mean loosing the channel.
It really sucks with tv now because it's all about reality tv.

3: This totally sucks. Being all soft and preachy is what I love about Animal Planet.
I only watch two or three shows on it now which is a drastic change to the "Animal Planet all day, every day" thing I had going on a few years ago.
Things like Top Hooker ( ), and Treehouse Master (which I kind of like I admit) and Fatal Attractions are just insane. They're not anything like what Animal Planet was and should be. I can stand things like the Bigfoot show and River Monsters, but those are about animals. Not Fishers, a treehouse builder (still freakin' amazing though), and people getting maimed and mauled.
I occasionally watch that Pit bulls and Paroles, but only when Animal Planet does fundraiser things for them (like for every viewer they donate 5 or 10 dollars to the shelter) and when they came to Alabama two years ago after those tornadoes blew away a pit-bull shelter down here. But that show makes me cry and I can't watch it all the time XD
I honestly can't watch most of the shows on Animal Planet with getting a little sick to my stomach.
I miss Jeff Corwin, those baby animal shows, Victoria from It's me or the Dog, Merkat Manner (not really an old show, but those wittle critters were adorable), Pet Star and, Plants Funniest Animals. I even miss Emergency Vets.

I think also without Steve Erwin and that Jeff Corwin guy, there aren't as many super popular and well known die hard animal people. I really miss him, it seems like without the old animal planet and discovery channel people in the future aren't gonna take the environment seriously and society will just go back to tearing down forest and endangering more creatures....though that might be a long jump

Agh yes I used to love that channel way back but now it seems to have gone the direction of all the reality programming craze and the "surprisingly human" slogan just annoys me in all kinds of ways. I pretty much never watch it anymore. I've encountered people who treat their animals like humans and it can get downright sad for the animal. Aren't animals great and fascinating for just being animals? I thought the channel was supposed to be about that? Honestly I think they could have done a better job of being"edgy" if they'd stuck to just real life animals. xD

I've been reading several rants and discussions about this issue for a few weeks now, and my friend and I both have strong opinions on this issue also. I don't want to think Animal Planet is money grubbing and doing what they do just to get more viewers and get more money, ignoring the values their channel once held. But that seems to be what they're doing. I'm not really saavy with television ratings, but is 9% that much? Why did that 9% drop? Is it because people weren't watching as families, or because of a loss of values handed down from one generation to the next?
I ask this question because the media generally show us things shocking, things we either wish weren't happening, or are thankfully happening somewhere else, but we still watch, fascinated. I don't know what that says about people, most likely something based on our more primal instincts.
In any case, my issue isn't so much with Animal Planet's decisions, as my issue is with something gone amiss in the most recent generations. Some people I talk to simply don't care about animals or nature, not that they wish them harm really, but they're simply too wrapped up with their own lives to take notice or feel any concern. This 'I come first, I have my own problems' mentality has been severely imprinted on youth, and that's my biggest concern.
There are places where people are trying hard to educate youth and adults alike, telling them about how wonderful the natural world is, how it works, why we need it more than anything and should respect and want to nourish it. And there's more of that now than there was a decade ago, or two decades ago and so on.
But now it seems to me that the educating is almost too little too late. How many people are educated as opposed to people taught by their parents to 'worry about themselves' and to ignore bigger, worldly problems?
Iunno, I guess I'm ranting a little here. It's just...it seems to me, the Animal Planet's broadcasting issue is only a result of a bigger problem with us as a race.
What I do know is my mother raised me and my first two brothers on King Arthur, dinosaurs, and Discovery Channel animal shows. We were watching sharks hard core before we had any specific shows or channels we liked. And I think that had a big imprint on us about our values. The last sibling though, he was spoiled, and mom didn't take as much control with what he watched or did. And he's recently 18 with a record on file, as well as history with trouble with cops since he was 15. And I know he doesnt care one hoot about animals or plants or anything the world has to offer if he can't get it for free. So...it makes a difference, the choices we make as the older generation, and how it reflects and imprints on the younger generation.
Any media channel is going to serve the masses - and I think animal lovers isn't a big enough majority with satellite to win this one. It's a sad fact, and I hope I'm wrong.
Sorry for the long comment. Just thought I should say it instead of hiding it away again.
