Description Sorry for the blurriness of the photos, the only camera I have is on my phone and it's... not fantastic.

This is a £15 Ukulele that I bought yesterday. It had been in the window of the shop and was slightly sunstained, so I decided to decorate it. The blue varnish is the original colour, then I used sharpie markers and posca pens. You can't really see the sharpie (it's dark blue) but it gives more depth on the actual real life, "not-a-crummy-photo" ukulele.

The design on the back looks slightly off-center because, as it turns out, it's quite difficult to get musical instruments to stay still in photoshoots!

As of yesterday, yes. I'm not *good* at it yet, but I have all summer to practice.

You sure play a lot of instruments don't you? You remind me of my drum teacher. She has an Ukulele too.

In my defence, I am doing a music degree.

But then, most of the things I play have really similar systems. So if you can play the clarinet, for example, then you'd find it easier to play sax, flute, recorder, tin whistles etc. I've learned the guitar before, so the Ukulele is more of a "getting used to different chords" and less "learning from scratch."

I still can't play any percussion though! *cries*

I only play two instruments. And they're both percussion. I played the trumpet and the clarinet in elementary school, but it wasn't really my style.

I think it takes more skill to play percussion, really. I mean, you guys don't have all the pitches to play with (unless it's pitched percussion) and the subtleties of percussion instruments are immense.

I don't think it needs more skill per say, I just think it requires something different than what's needed to play others.

THANK YOU! And so do I... now. I think the problems of being a wind player is you're raised to dislike stringed things with a passion.

Oh I get that, too. Play flute and Tin Whistle. Also, my nails are too long for string instruments and I can't bring myself to cut them.

Hehe, I was playing violin in a concert a few months ago and I'd forgotten to cut my nails; one of them caught on the string at the end of a pianissimo minor chord and went... PINNNNG!

My conductor had the most amazing deathglare..!

I can imagine! Oh I haven't picked up a violin since my 5th grade. I never held it right...

I still don't. I know vaguely that it goes on the left shoulder, and that if it's in anything other than first or third position I won't be able to play it!

LOL Well, also I'm left-handed - which seems to throw everything off. >.<

What's it like playing flute when you're left handed, out of interest? (I'm ambidextrous and all my flute friends are right handed, so I've never found someone to ask that. )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MissSunFlower94 In reply to sivvus [2011-05-15 19:40:51 +0000 UTC]

Flute is an easy instrument to do right handed because both hands are making the same motions (as opposed to violin one with the bow and the other on the strings).
