Description So, where are the male X-Com troopers? They're near the Skyranger, all KIA. They weren't gentlemen. They went out first.

If you ever become a soldier in the Extraterrestrial Combat force, pick the one called XCOM and avoid X-Com. At least then you have a chance. The superhuman difficulty level in the original game WILL KILL YOU. See, the commander has to use rookie fodder to win a mission. Poor rookies.

Tools: Mouse, Paint Shop Pro 7, superhuman patience

Ah yes, apparently the original 90's XCOM was brutally unforgiving, where even the tiniest misstep would slay everyone who left the skyranger! Nice painting by the way!

Friend of mind had a Snakeman terror mission, at night.Β  Full 14 person team remaining, only one alien left.Β  Turns the wrong way, opens a door, and it is a Chryssalid.Β  Soldier had no time units left.

Wound up with one trooper at the very back of the Skyranger with a fully lit interior, crouching on a pile of ammo, picking off the aliens one at a time.

...And everyone who were inside it, too. It's totally possible to find a blaster launcher-wielding alien right outdoors, who fires the weapon when you dare to do anything. Instant 14 troops KIA and the Skyranger lost.

They were exciting times.

And this is why X-Com sells gear to whoever buys it in the first game. They need the money for more rookies and HWP/rocket platforms.

Seriously, in the first game, you need to research Laser Weapons, followed by Laser Pistols.Β  Then keep your Engineers busy building them for sale (unless you need Engineers for other projects, but once those other projects are finished get them back to building Laser Pistols).Β  Until you get Laser Cannons, the humble Laser Pistol makes a lot of money when you build them for sale.Β  You might even build a few extra bases whose only purpose is to build Laser Pistols (and Later Laser Cannons) to sell to keep your money flowing in.

As the Base Commander in the X-Com book mentioned, some nation was going to have a very well-armed rebellion on its hands after the war.

All hail the humble Laser Pistol, the true savior of humanity!

Thank you for the watch.

Well, those guys will be forever known as the Pawn unit and will be honored accordingly... Damn Rookies!

But the ladiesΒ should look on the bright side they get promoted and know what to watch out for.Β

On a serious note, you did a wonderful job with this scene here and made me think about the current game of X-com 2 which I'm playing now and had to restartΒ because of how I decided to go to the highest setting when I first played it.Β

Again, you did a wonderful job with this.Β

With rifles and personal armor in a Terror mission against Snakemen with their Chryssalid beast allies?
I fear that the non-gentlemen won't stay the only victims here.

Personally I'd just skip it.

They knew the risks. They also have a rocket specialist with them. The Chryssalids aren't fond of rockets.

I'm quite sure I remember one of them once surviving a direct Blaster Bomb hit...
Oh well, replacing X-Com soldiers never was much of a problem early in the game.

And I still remember my highest-ranking soldier back then... guy named Dmitriy Kolotov, Commander, Flying suit with Heavy Plasma and Psi-Amp and the very guy who finished off the alien brain. Woah.

My first commander was a guy named W.C. Redwood. His second in command was Jake Redwood, who happend to be his cousin. Yep, a cousin. Astra was the third heroic one and all survived the war. They were protected by the heavenly save game magic.

Their kids (W.C., Jake and Astra) fought in the seas 40 years later and survived the Terror from the Deep... until the final mission.

Their grandkids (also named W.C., Jake and Astra) were in the next game, but because I never finished it I don't know what happend to them.

I love this, shows a nice representation for how other players saw this as, to be honest second time round chyrssids weren't that bas as you change tactis to react shots (and using lot of bombs to clear up hiding grounds, but first time round who would had suspected those things would had spawned the zombie Armageddon?

I would say out of all the terror units (besides ethereals) Β the sectoid's cyberdisk was a nightmare to face.

Floaters though? Right now am doing a drawing to highlight how incompetent they were!

SirTiefling In reply to TheBritWriter [2015-06-04 14:26:15 +0000 UTC]

Cyberdiscs bad? Oh yes. Those monsters flew, were absurdly tough and when they "died"... BOOM.

Once lost four guys when my math failed and I thought everyone was clear...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheBritWriter In reply to SirTiefling [2015-06-22 18:19:32 +0000 UTC]

ouch, it happens, with all the gun shooting and movement its easy to forget who is where let alone how many, I actually find smaller squads are better just so you haven't got extra luggage hanging round and trying to give them cover ots as well.

Fun thing about cyberdisks is while they are tough once you get good aim skills with laser rifles they can become your biggest advantage given their destructive yield and the sectoids odd habit of staying near to those things (maybe they only understand the literal definition of backfire!)

The women look sexy yet badass. =3

You don't have to use cannon fodder, just learn to love the spotters and snipers relationship ^^

And when all else fails, blaster launcher FTW! XD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SirTiefling In reply to DannyAndYoko [2015-05-12 14:59:35 +0000 UTC]

Thanks.

Yes, that tactic often works in the field, but spotters and snipers aren't so effective indoors. An alien who is facing the approaching soldier will shoot, will hit, will kill. The alien bases especially can really slaughter the X-Com. But the blaster launcher helps... after it has been acquired and researched.

DannyAndYoko In reply to SirTiefling [2015-05-12 15:05:10 +0000 UTC]

Murphy's law of Xcom, mate.

Bases I can generally complete really easy, the problem is the 2nd door to the command room.
The first time a trooper (or tank) goes in, you have an almost guaranteed Blaster bomb on it. XD
