Description The seven swans flew down at once;
and she threw upon the shirts-
one by one her brothers revealed
as their feathers fell to the earth.
The one she'd not had time to mend
left the youngest marked for life-
for from the loosened shirt sleeve's shreds
was a wing with feathers white.

The king rejoiced to hear his bride
as she explained once and for all
the toils she had overcome to save
her brothers from their thrall.
And all celebrated that joyous day
the beginning of a happy ever after-
but there was one who would remain
forever silent amidst the party's laughter.

The swan-winged prince could not help
but stare from hand to quill,
and wonder if he had truly been freed
or if it was really God's will
to doom him to the swan form first,
teaching him how to fly,
only to steal back that wonderous gift
and leave his heart to die.
His sister queen lamented her guilt
for her brother's deformation,
and swore to keep him in the courts
in a manner fitting his station.
She gave him clothes of finest silk,
and a cape that hid the limb,
hoping to bring back the voice he'd lost
and brighten the smile gone dim.

He spoke no more from that day hence,
though it was not she he blamed-
he'd stare up to the open sky,
his spirit still untamed.
No more would he taste the morning breeze,
nor chase the falling leaves.
He'd soar no more above the clouds
or sleep beneath the trees.
He was bird no more, nor was he human,
and he longed to feel a part-
but though he played the act of man
he flew with all his heart.

...The story of the seven swan brothers always made me sad... T__T It would suck to be this guy- I think I'd rather live a half-life as a swan-human than as a person with one wing for an arm. He's got it rough. I'm going to make him a major character in one of my Xylon stories, though, to help him find peace I just have to finish Grauwst first.

Anyway, I uploaded the scrap for this about a month ago, always meaning to come back and finish it... but I never got around to it. >.> However, when Sitauset uploaded her newest deviation ([link] ), I felt inspired to go back and finish this guy. And, he got a poem to boot! Lucky kid. ^_~

The picture itself is rather old- I did it back in Highschool, which was... wooo, a long time ago. The coloring, though, only took me about 40 minutes, including re-outlining and then messing with colors. I didn't want my usual color-happy look this time, I was going for a calmer, more subdued look, considering this is a slightly depressing picture/poem combo. When I took a step back to look at him, I realized that if he didn't have the weird wing thing going on, he'd look like Kay from "the snow queen", after he had his heart frosted over. Another story I'd like to do some fanart for sometime- maybe something that actually pertains to the plot, even!

More touch-up info: I redid his face and hair, making him look more like Tatsumi from yami no matsuei. Which is understandable, considering I took out said books to look over for reference as I touched this up. I know he's not perfect, and the sketch is far from beautiful, but I like it, none the less, and I think that all that matters. (even if it doesn't, I'm too busy and not really interested in reworking this picture again anyway, so it makes no difference either way).

Poem info- ...it just kinda happened. Let me know if it's a good spontaneous poem or no. I think the rhythm is wonky, but I can't figure out how to fix it right now... maybe later, after I get some sleep, ace my music test and get this stupid KH2 fanfic out of my head so it stops bugging me. >__<;;;

....Thank you to those who bothered reading my rant. I'll try cleaning it up later so it doesn't make people's eyes bleed as much, promise!

Comments and suggestions appreciated, as always!!

The face is incredibly expressive. You can feel his disappointment, the realisation settling in. Incredible.

The one-winged brother is a character I've been studying for some time. Sadly, he's not a much explored subject, though you would think that he'd have a fascinating perspective on life.

There are a couple books out there that retell/ continue Wild Swans if you're interested.

I remember this fairy tale now! And the poem you wrote was very sad and beautiful ;____; Peotry and art together are wonderful things

"He spoke no more from that day hence, though it was not she he blamed- he'd stare up to the open sky, his spirit still untamed. No more would he taste the morning breeze, nor chase the falling leaves. He'd soar no more above the clouds or sleep beneath the trees. He was bird no more, nor was he human, and he longed to feel a part- but though he played the act of man
he flew with all his heart. " - This part especially got to me ;___; You're very clever with your style of writing, I like it very much

I also love his eyes, he looks so very pensive... Poor boy ;___;
