The house used is just down the street from where I live. The Carson Mansion.[link]
Just curious, did you know about this house or just a random photo or what was your source?

Okay, I'm finding this very interesting. If I'm reading this right, this image is from a real house that you have altered to look creepy and spooky. Now I just looked at a "haunted house" picture by DAN-KA. Now it is clear that his (or her?) picture is not a copy of the house in question, but (tell me if I'm wrong) doesn't it look like he almost had to borrow elements of this house for his work? It must be an inspiring place.

They are very similar, in very related styles. And while I would love to say that I was that inspirational, I would be willing to bet that they simply started off with a common Gothic/Victorian house as a model. They all have roughly the same elements - lots of scrollwork in the eaves, columns, widow's walks, tall, pointy roofs... the architectural movement became so popular because it was suddenly really easy to make that sort of decorational scrollwork in the new Industrial Revolution's factories, so they were cheap. A lot of those houses tend to look alike, so I'd be willing to bet that he just started out with a similar reference.
But I really appreciate the note - it's great that you're so sharp on the lookout for this. :]

Wow now that is one awesome haunted house! It reminds me of one I wrote a story of once... This is definitely desktop wallpaper worthy! <3

Haha. I know what you mean. I used it as a modified LJ layout once. Well, you are free to use it as desktop wallpaper, though I would ask you don't distribute it around. :3 Enjoy!

Hey, sorry for the fav and run--I faved this a long time ago... and didn't comment...
Anyway, Your piece has request for advanced critique encouraged, so here it goes: (I'm not going to bash you, just constructive critisizm. feel free to stop reading at any time.) :
THIS PIECE IS GOOD. I can see that it must've taken hours to complete, the details and the mood and such. it looks amazing. I particularly like the sky.
However, it doesn't strike me so much of a haunted house as it does a creepy house. If you wanted to make it more 'haunted', I suggest you throw in a little disarray or neglect into the picture. maybe make a few cracks on the walls, or a broken window, or the sign hanging off one hinge. it would add to the 'abandoned haunted house' look. but then again, you did say that it started out as a victorian house, so I imagine it only became 'haunted' after you changed the mood. haunted wasn't the original intent, so there isnt really need for cracks.
also, about the rain--it gives a good mood, and I like it (I couldn't do any better, myself,) but it's evenly spaced, and all slanting perfectly, parallel to one another. rain doesn't really fall like that. It's just something to think about; making the scene look more natural by changing the rain to look less orderly.
But I actually have no specific problem with the rain, it does the job of making the the mood very well, and it's done nicely. Don't change it if you don 't want; it's good. it just could be better if you wanted to go down that road.
I'm nto trying to compare this to my own ability; I have nocapacity for drawing backgrounds or using photoshop. your piece is something I wish I could do, and it's a very good picture.
Sorry if this isn't what you wanted to hear. Anyway, Good luck with future pieces!

Hey! I'm glad for any response, but this rocks my world that you took the time to type this up, even after so much time. Thank you!
You make a good point about haunted vs. creepy. I hadn't thought about it that way.
As to the rain, I see exactly what you mean. I don't know that I'll spend the time to go back now and fix it (I did make this almost two years ago now, and my attention span for this sort of thing is sporadic at best) but I will definitely keep that in mind on any stuff I do with rain in the future. Because you're right - real rain doesn't all fall perfectly aligned.
Don't worry about critiquing. Everyone has an eye that likes art, whether or not they have 'experience.' I'm glad to hear intelligent feedback. That's how we all improve. So! Thanks for the response!
