1010 WORDS!*

*( or: "...This Artist's work got me writing a 1010 word critique and I'm quite busy right now so, whoever I am is irrelevant..., but, I am neither related nor her partner.. or hoping to be... ^-^ so you should probably go have a look at her stuff right?...." )

Summary:
My critique, as far as the actual CSS Coding and Graphic design elements are concerned may be summed-up simply as:

Professional looking, Harmonious, Well-balanced Packaged efficiently and accessibly, with a very generous: "Selection of Customisable Variables" for users/clients of this "Skin"... as well as being a credit to the Artists steadily growing portfolio and, I might add, (with a certain degree of personal pleasure and satisfaction), ...reputation... Bravo.

Detail:
I would like to point out my reasons for the summary by laying them out via their relationship to the star rating system:

Vision: 5
Because I am utterly convinced that this artist has a well developed, original and well -thought through concept and strategy for her work... One cannot, without being annoyingly unreasonable, either expect, or hope for more..

So in Summary: Maximum marks (and no tax...)

Originality: 4.5 :
On a certain level, ....some may argue that this particular skin may be fairly simple-looking without much in the way of fire works! or quirky inserts and doodads... and also, perhaps that it is simplistic and a touch middle of the road... lacking in any force of character that makes this piece jump off the page

To all those who would subscribe to any or all of the comments above I would like to say this:

I think that this artist is capable of creating a considerable variety of types and styles in her area of endeavour so this one is, obviously, simply one expression of the Artists originality: Skins, or indeed, any art, should be assessed on a singular basis... I know this, but I'm afraid, it is my "failing?", that I tend to look at a given artists other work to see where the piece, presently under critique is situated within the pantheon or evolution, if you will, of an artist's ensemble of work; this knowledge of it's placement is, I believe, part of it's "raison d'etre" and has therefore merits an important place in the assessment of the current work under examination.

The fact that this CSS example is so easy on the eye is precisely what makes it such a superb example of the genre: one can return to it again and again with no weariness of eye or soul, happy in the knowledge that when it is installed as your "Gallery Skin" you can sit in front of your screen editing your deviations, perhaps re-arranging their order to be more attractive and presentable /representative of your work etc, without your eyes or creative brain getting assaulted by constant "bells and whistles" Parties are great!...yummm!... but you really wouldn't want them in your home every day of the year...would you?

So in summary: Maximum marks for Originality (minus 0.5 star tax)*

*(minus half a star tax): Which I take off every critique I do, not just here on DA, as a "tax" if you will..., to honour all those artists who have influenced and inspired everyone on DA's work.. there are no exceptions... and more importantly: to remember those same artists for their blazed trails, suffering and scorn at the hands of dogma, public shortsightedness and prejudice and having fought for our current, breathtakingly fortunate: Freedom Of Expression In Art. but we're all still fighting!... right?.....for the future of those yet to come...)

Technique:
Since I am a novice at CSS coding, and I am aware that this Artist is an "Auto-Didact" as far as learning her coding trade from the analysis of example projects is concerned, (I remain ignorant of her graphic design CV if one exists, it wouldn't surprise me in the least to learn that their art relies simply on a naturally talented eye for colour, balance and style), I shall simply insert here that I have tried her work out.... and it functions... ....and it functions almost effortlessly! and with a grace and ease of access, (to it's customizable features), that even a "wet behind the ears- blundering in the undergrowth-frightened as a kitten in a sharks mouth-newbie like myself can assimilate and, in no time at all, be cheerfully swapping around the look of my journal and gallery skin(s) to accommodate the look of my latest projects or more efficiently lay out the text and illustrations in my gallery and journals, the better to present my work to peers and potential commissioners and clients alike so:

So in summary: Maximum marks for Technique (minus 0.5 star tax)*

*(minus half a star tax): Since I am a self-Confessed newbie @ CSS, I feel obliged to deduct a token half-star tax for the Artist pulling the wool over my eyes in a way I can't quite put my finger on yet because I'm too ignorant/stooped to perceive a lazy shortcut here... or an out of alignment not quite up to the mark sheet of coding that I am unqualified to assess..... but will in due course, I hope, with a growing knowledge in the field, (although... and someone out there can perhaps help me with this by leaving a note in my homepage here on DA, why it is that some people feel they will learn more in the fields with cows grass dung and rain, than on their computers... does for the present escape me... I expect I'll learn eventually... sigh...)discover and then reveal to the world...

Impact
You can see this coming! whilst at the same time not blasting it's way into your eyeballs and brains and leaving a detritus and concomitant area of chaos in it's wake like certain of its cousins.... in this branch of design... works for me!

So in summary: Maximum marks for Impact (minus 0.5 star tax)*

*(minus half a star tax): Minus 0.5 Just so that you don't get "Cocky"

...there's always room for improvement...right?....

end.

Ahh, thank you so much for such a detailed and lengthy critique! Even if you are a self-proclaimed "wet behind the ears- blundering in the undergrowth-frightened as a kitten in a sharks mouth-newbie" in this particular medium, any artist's honest feedback is valuable to me.

Thanks for the explanations on your critique as well. I perfectly understand why you'd put in the little 0.5 star deductions as "tax", and, as you said, there is always plenty of room for improvement.

I am a big fan of minimalist style, which is why I like to design such simple looking skins. I admit that part of that stems from laziness, as designing extra images and tid-bits can get rather time consuming. But I've also tried a lot of other people's skins, and I've found that for something designed for the general public, something simple works best because it's most likely to be complementary to the artists' works. If I specialized the skin too much, there's a chance that it won't fit for as many people.

Technique probably deserves less than that. dA's gallery formatting has changed, and I admit that my coding isn't as clear and simple as it could be. I just wanted to get the update after dA's change up as quickly as possible, so I didn't get a chance to investigate more into it.Β

And by the way, you were correct to point out that there should be a #7 for the "All" option. There would be a #6 for "Comments only", but the way that the code works, it becomes a little more complicated than deleting a line or two, so I left that option out. I don't know what I was thinking with that list, leaving out the "All" option. I will go fix that now~

But thanks again for the critique! You are amazing for leaving so much feedback!

This is surely one of the best Gallery CSS designs I have ever seen!

So simple yet stunning, this goes to show that you don't need a bunch of frills and ribbons on your gallery for it to look unique.

The colours are pleasing to the eye and they are not too light or too dark. The deviations are arranged neatly, along with the text and headings. It is also very well organised.

There aren't many Gallery CSS out there, but this is the one I will make sure to use when I get a PM! Be sure to make more!

All of what is here is simply breath taking! I love all the color I see here. It's very simple, clean and well organized. Very abstract too in several ways from what I can see from the photos here. Overall I think your vision was good. This definitely caught my attention first hand. I think its originality here is good too. Your technique is good too. I really like how you set everything up. You seem like the kind of person who is very bold, daring and that speaks to me just by looking at the pictures. Very nice job here with this.

I've Already Purchased This Skin Before I Comment, I Waste My Points. But I Hope SimplySilent Is Giving Back The Points. I'm Not Mad, You Can Just Keep The Points Or Giving It Back To Everyone. Or You Can Just Update The Skins And Everyone Who Purchase It Will ReDownload It Back.
