Would you mind if I used a few elements of this for a ship that'll be in a book I'm writing and maybe a model?

I am in love with this design, its got enough style to be imaginative, but it also touches on some of the "harder" sci fi aspects of spaceship designs. Bravo.

Interesting
What does UCSF stand for?
Is it for long range exploration or something?

Why does the middle look so weak?

Probably under tensile rather than compressive force, assuming the engine pulls the rest along.

This sort of construction is actually a much more sound design than most of the crap you see in Hollywood space-fantasy.
Spacecrafts are not boats or airplanes and they do not follow the same engineering principles.
Saving mass is one of the most important concerns in spacecraft designs.
