Yay!
Yup. Due by the end of the week. But I'm going to give you yours right now.

Your sense of composition in this piece needs a little work. The brightest spot is essentially in the middle of the piece. This makes an otherwise dynamic piece seem static. While the main body of the piece follows the rule of thirds, which is generally a very good standard to follow, that single bright spot will draw attention away from the other parts of the piece. You might have that same light fleck onto the beak and the head feathers, perhaps applying a little more of that same dark as well.Β
Speaking of light, where is your source coming from in the picture? It seems like a diffuse source in the shadows, but a very directional source in the light. With the way the snow is blowing, it looks like it should be coming from the lower-left. But your highlights suggest a flash from the upper right. The different directionals are a bit confusing.Β
I love your from and textures. While they do not attempt to scream "I am a feathered beast!" they convey it well, especially given the lighting you have. You put more detail into the areas where the light is most pronounced, and less into the shadows, and that's the way it should be. On top of that, your eyes and beak are crisp and clear, while your feathers appear soft. Good job on that attention, though the beak should get a little more of a shine, given the brightness of the eye.Β
I do have a little bit of an issue with how many soft brushes you used. If you try this again, challenge yourself by using only hard-edged brushes. See if you can make the same dynamic motion.Β
Your overall color scheme is good! If you could reflect a little bit of the red in the tongue somewhere else in the composition, that would be swell. (And that single blue dot... what happened there? It's an easy fix, but it pops right out. ) Your values also pack quite a punch, bringing your character forward, and separating it well from the background. Well done, there!Β
And, on a final note, the snow detailing down around the neck... that's gorgeous. It brings some amount of three-dimensionality to an otherwise relatively straight-on shot. Try moving your camera off the horizon line, and see what else you can do!
I hope this was helpful, and if you have any questions, please let me know. :3
