Lots of practice and experimenting lately... and looking at some fur tutorials. Lately how I’ve been doing my shaded drawings is like this: first I do all the flat color. Then I do some basic overall shading/light with the airbrush. Then I go back in and use the water color tool to do more fur detail, making the brush bigger or smaller depending on how fine the fur is on each area of the animal’s body. I usually use the smudge tool a bit on this tooth make the fur texture look a bit softer. I do multiple layers of shading and light to give more and more depths the fur. Multiply/overlay layer mods are your best friend if your art program has them; I use them a lot for shading. Then I usually do one or two last layers of general airbrush shading/light on top to really emphasize the deep shadows and whatnot.
