Can I ask you a question? Do you paint the back ground first then paint the character over the top or paint the character and paint the back ground arround them?

Actually... It is advised (and the right way) to do the light bg first and then the character, but on this specific pice I did the chara first and then the bg.
Well, since it is a fanart, then I know the colours of the character but I didnt have any idea for the bg... xD And well... Actually thats the way I work with fanarts tho. xDD Yup, it is harder to work this way and the chance of colours "bleeding" into eachother is very high, but yea.Chara first and then the bg. xDDD

I've never actually painted bg's the propper way. I keep worrying that the bg colours will show trough, but I suppose your supposed to take the colour away (if you're using water colours) where the character will go.
I usually do that for all characters 
Do you usually do the bg first? I'm not to sure how I'd go about doing a bg first the the character.

Hummm... Well, first I sketch the whole thing, line it with a waterproof marker, erase the graphite lines and then start watercolouring only the skin parts, let it dry and then move on to clothes and so on. And when it comes to the bg, I choose the colours/tones based on the clothings colours. (sth what would fit the clothes colours) and then... Pretty much watercolour rest of the parts the same way, leaving the already coloured parts untouched... Okay thats a long explanation... O.O
As I saied, I do the character first and then the bg and choose the bg colours accordingly to the overall clothes tones.
But If you do the bg first, then yes, you leave the part of the paper, where the character is, compleatly white. (or as white as possible unless the clothes tones are darker than the bg)

Wow, this is very very nice. I like the white paint splatters, they arn't that noticable, but they add a lot.
