Description Soo, noah-v-dragoon from tumblr asked if I could draw "FSN - archer and saber hugging and crying with joy" and I fell in love with that prompt. Kinda. And well, something that was  supposed to be a simple fast sketch, turned into 3 hrs ink because, as I said, I really fell in love with that prompt.

I really like working with black and white.

This isn't impossible since Archer is Shirou.

I know, but if you go strictly by canon, in the Shirou x Saber story outcome, Shirou never became Archer. Still there is so many variations and so many possibilities

In the Fate route, Shirou does become a sort of guardian/servant himself but not exactly like Archer since he was inspired by his love for Saber, not just his ideals. That's just what I heard other fans say. If you played the FSN game, there is a secret ending where Shirou reunites with Saber in Avalon after his death.

I know, that's what I was saying. They does reunite, but Shirou is someone else than his "archer" version [who is kinda, a bad-end version of him]. The future that made him grow into that person, didn't happen in the Fate route.

He may have ended up looking the same as Archer since his frequent use of his magic circuits and projection abilities changed his appearance but his personality would be different.

Ahem. I love how expressive the hugging pose in general and especially Saber's face is. It's even more in focus since your shading is monochrome, clean and clear cut. Well done!

(On a side note: I wonder what Archer's/ *SPOILER*Shirou's expression looks like)

That's another one right in the feels.
TYPE-MOON truly is overwhelming us with new material (for instance a new light novel featuring Arturia/Saber with Manaka Sayjou as her master)!
(Although if you're one of the unlucky people who do not live in an English-speaking country, then crunchyroll doesn't stream the UBW episodes yet)
I just wish there were more fanworks involving this Archer and this Saber and/or that they'd have more in-depht interaction in canon material... I feel like it's so much wasted potential.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

shuu-washuu In reply to Luminarywalker [2015-04-11 09:45:04 +0000 UTC]

Haha yeah no crunchyroll Fate for us here. We only get several of the english releases on CR, each month, but I saw that other countries get much more because CR currently simulcasts almost everything. Oh well, hopefully someday we will get bigger choice.

And yeah I've noticed there is Fate/prototype novel in the works, and last december there was fate/strange fake by Narita. Lots of material as usual. Now I only hope someone will publish in english fate/extra ccc.

I agree it would be interesting to see more canon intractions, but since we don't... there is always fandom to look for

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Luminarywalker In reply to shuu-washuu [2015-04-12 09:40:57 +0000 UTC]

As they say: Hope will never die.   (Though I'd be easier if Crunchyroll stopped automatically checking the country of the IP-Adress accessing the site and then forcing the user to go to Crunchyroll's respective version in that country... I really hate it when website's do that, since I'm not living in an English-speaking country but prefer to read articles, videos etc. in English)

Lots of material indeed. It's so much in fact that it makes me sad that the hype around TYPE-MOON works didn't manage to make it outside from Japan (as the international fandom is relatively small compared to the Japanese ), but I really hope that this will change after the new whole UBW anime has aired.

Indeed, indeed. It still makes me sad that there are more fanworks of Saber paired with a certain AUO (which I see more as a crack pairing since it just... doesn't... absolutely... work... well  ) than with Archer/EMIYA although it's not such a far stretch from ShirouXSaber and works much better.
...Err... sorry about the ship-tirade.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

shuu-washuu In reply to Luminarywalker [2015-04-14 10:14:25 +0000 UTC]

We don't even have polish version of the crunchyroll, we have everything in english. Just the pool of anime to choose from is kinda small.  I have a small hope it will grow along the subscriptions or something, but in the end, we always don't have the titles I want to watch, bar some. We got Free, Akatsuki no Yona and Kill la Kill so there is some hope.

Honestly, I think it's problem with most of anime fandoms. They are huge in Japan and rarely anywhere else. It's either, anime fandom was bigger when I was younger [I still remember how much there was stuff for Weiss Kreuz, or Gundam Wing or Yami no Matusei], or they were always the same, just we now have comparision of how they look in Japan / and comparision with english series fandoms. Compared to these they will always look small haha. I think I found like 7 fics total for my preffered pairing with Fate [and tons of dojins and art, but since I can't read japanese...]. At first it made me sad, but on the other hand, I think I didn't fell too deep into fandom thanks to that lack of fanwork. It's harder with DRRR now, because it does have a big fanwork backlog, and now I'm hooked x_X

pfffft AUO and Saber... well, I think there always are pairings that doesn't really make sense, but are super popular. Joy of crackpairs. People often choose pairings not based on the probability of it's happening, but either because of sympathy to characters, design or even conflict.
As much as I like ShirouxSaber, I am much more interested in perspective of Emiya!ArcherxSaber. IDK maybe because of change of atttitude, Archer maturity and I guess the design, because red vs blue looks pretty cool.

Don't be sorry! I like discussing things, even I'm slow at reply sometimes ;A;

Luminarywalker In reply to shuu-washuu [2015-04-16 19:19:46 +0000 UTC]

Whoa, really? That's even more aggravating then. ...And it doesn't really make sense either. I mean, I don't know the exact details concerning distribution licenses, but if they don't have to change the subs/make a new dub then as long as Crunchyroll as such has the licence for English sub/dub then logically, all of them should be theoretically accessible to countries with English as the default setting... Haah, it's confusing. x.x

I think it's mostly the comparison-thingy. Plus there's also some heightened awareness on our parts; when I was younger, I'd just watch the dub and not look too deeply outside of that into the anime I watched. But yeah, if you're looking at current anime "giants" (like Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, etc.) then the fandom really is small.
Additionally, the 'starting medium' is a bit of an issue too. The anime giants all started as manga, serialized weekly or monthly, so the respective franchises would hold the attention of the fans regularly and for a longer period, so it's not really surprising that a demand for an anime adaptation would arise comparatively soon, sell well and thus get a realease outside of Japan. DRRR! on the other hand has an advantage too, as it started as a light novel series and was, similarly to SAO or To Aru Majutsu No Index, adapted and has spin-off's as well, so here too the fandom gets new material regularly, sells regularly and thus there's another (good) adaptation outside of Japan.
Tsukihime and Fate/Stay Night on the other hand... well, Visual Novels aren't as well known outside of Japan. Also - with the original VN - you got the whole story in one package, so you could play through it obsessively over the course of 1-2 weeks, then be thrilled for another 1-3 weeks and then move on to something else. Granted, today we have Koha-Ace, the annual April Fool's, regularly new spin-offs etc. but well... that's in Japan. And most of the stuff never gets an (official) English translation (the VN was after all never officially translated), except for the (rather average) adaptation of the Fate Route in 2006 and of course Fate/Zero and the current UBW anime and the Fate/Extra game.
...Honestly, imagine how much bigger the International fandom would become if TYPE-MOON bothered to invest some money into a bunch of Japanese-to-English-translators and find some investors in the West... They could probably gain even more money (and Nasu could no longer complain that they don't have enough budget for a Tsukihime 2). It really is a waste.

Aaah, the ArcherxSaber doujins... Moonspeakers are so lucky. Unfortunately, the lack of (comprehensible) fanwork for this ship didn't stop me from delving into the Fate-fandom, simply because a) I'm generally not much of a ship-y person and b) there were so many interesting characters that I liked so that was enough for me to keep me invested.
(Also: good luck with DRRR! It's on my have-yet-to-but-must-watch-list so I'll probably follow you into the abyss at some point XD)

Mh-hm, sounds right to me. I mean, if creators of GilxSaber had a good grasp on their inner workings and really tried to explore the dynamics then...
...
...
Nn... well, it still wouldn't be what you call a good/healthy relationship, but it would be an interesting read at least. I simply prefer interesting relationship-dynamics over "But their so HAWT together <3" . That's why I agree with you with Emiya!Archer being more world-weary and matured than dear Shirou and considering how Saber suffered a very similar fate to Emiya!Archer (save for the Realta Nua episode or UBW Good End) their dynamics, conflicts or even a kind of mutual understanding/consolation sounds that much more interesting.  (Plus the exploration of the ShirouxSaber dynamic has been shown very well in Fate, and also on occasion in UBW, so there's that too)
Apart from red vs. blue, you also have tall vs. small, person who teases vs. person who gets teased and cook vs. hungryheart. XD

... Whoops. Well, if you weren't sorry you're probably sorry now.

shuu-washuu In reply to Luminarywalker [2015-05-05 08:08:52 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I have no idea how it works. We are playing in euro or dollars for english-language service, so they could at least give us the same access. I can understand it being licensing thing with small number of series - like Fate/Zero which I think aired on Canal+, and Black Lagoon which was on other TV - but the total number is probably around 10 series. So it's the licensing from the other side, they might not want to give license here, until we prove was profitable market... which since it's not even translated from english might be a problem. I like watching english subs, no problem with that for me, but I know many, often younger, people who will rather download PL subs, than give crunchyroll monye.

I think that it's also the issue of anime in TV. We still have Dragon Ball fandom, small not as big as those 10 years ago, but resurfacing a bit everytime it reairs. Same with Sailor Moon, althouh it's much smaller, no re-airings, but a new series reanimated that zombie a bit.

I remember how huge in english internet were Slayers or Gundam Wing. Fanfic and fanart sites everyone [geocities lol], anipike archive had tons of links, it was amazing. But since it was one of not many series airing, AND it was pretty long, it grabbed the attention.

Guess currently we lack the lenghty series to keep people interested for long. Yeah there are tapeworms like Naruto, Bleach and One Piece, but little else. Most series run 12 - 25 at best. At least the anime creators noticed it, and are spacing the seasons more often the not, which gives the series a bit of long livelty.

And yeah, stories that have their roots in manga are most known here for obvious reasons. It's much easier to translate manga, thana light novel. And light novel is easier to translate then a game, which usually has much more text, and you have to integrate the text with game itself. Honestly, I'm still surprised there is SO MANY translated VN, at least on seinen/shonen/ero. I wouldn't mind more otome translations haha, but I guess that side of VN fandom is smaller.

I kinda wish Ufotable good do an everything adaptation haha. All routes, then Hollow Ataraxia, maybe other spins off [apocrypha plz]. Anime could keep the fandom running here [or not...everyone would stop ranting, OH NO ANOTHER FATE].

OH yes, exactly that. I can see how Shirou is good for Saber and can help a healing process, but the more I think of it, I'm starting to see Rin as better for Shirou, while Saber having interesting connection with Archer, due to their maturity and weariness. Plus yes, he's a good cook too, so the most important factor [feed plz, feed nao] is covered.

Hahaha I love how much of a foodporn FSN is. Even ufotable adaptation got it covered, drawing the tasty foods with so much love and detail XD

(Terribly, terribly sorry for the very late reply! >.< I was stuck with report deadlines and the horror known as end-of-term-exams so I couldn't give you a proper reply until now. So if you're tired of this discussion then you can just ignore this message. )

Indeed. The market is not profitable (yet) because there is no sufficient amount of licensed and subbed anime (yet) and thus people go to illegal streaming sides instead, hence the market won't grow either. It's a vicious cycle which probably won't be broken until we manage to get a rich, anime-obsessed CEO or something into the industry.

True. While anime such as Sword Art Online (and it's continuations/spinoffs) are slowly becoming the Naruto, Bleach and One Piece for the next generation, most of the more Shounen-ish anime, which usually turn out to appeal to a large audience, are truly too short. Though luckily there are some good anime who have been getting several seasons, such as Attack on Titan and Magi, and are still ongoing, so there is still some hope.

Haha, I feel the same. If ufotable adapted all the routes and Fate spinoffs (and maybe Tsukihime or DDD too ) then the TYPE-MOON - hype in Japan might finally properly reach the rest of the world. On another note, if you look around on the internet you'll always find someone nagging about an adaptation or a fandom or similar. I've seen quite a few TYPE-MOON/Fate fans complaining about details in the ufotable adaptation and then saying that these things ruined the whole adaptation, disregarding all the good or fantastic other points. Thankfully, many viewers are not obsessed with the finer details; after all, I've just seen in my inbox, that even clubs, who are not explicitly themed after TYPE-MOON, have far, far more Fate fanart than they used to, which makes me very, very happy.

Seconding the Saber - Archer part, but if I'm perfectly honest, then I prefer Shirou with Sakura over Shirou with Rin (although I'm okay with both ships, since I also like Shirou's and Rin's banter  ) due to the different character dynamics.
I remember reading a post somewhere on tumblr which compared the different character dynamics of Shirou and the three heroines in the respective routes. At some point, the post mentioned that in UBW, while Rin is there to stop Shirou from turning into Archer, ultimately, Shirou has not given up on his ideal and still has his eyes set on it, somewhat alienating him from Rin and perhaps stopping him from achieving true happiness.
However, the post points ot that in HF, although Sakura supports Shirou in his ideals and doesn't want him to give them up for her sake, Shirou still abandons them to save the one he loves and the one who makes him happy. Also, I get the feeling that in HF's True End, Shirou might lead the most peaceful and happy life, as he no longer seems to pursue his ideals and is far less involved in things relating to magic.
...Err... that post brought some better comparisons, but that's the gist of it. Well, Shirou/Sakura may also be further biased because I like the shy and sweet characters and because the Heaven's Feel route is my favorite. *insert excited squealing for Heaven's Feel ufotable adaptation*

As for the "episodes available on legal streaming sites"-thingy... to tell the truth, now that the anime ended, I'll probably end up binge-watching the whole thing as soon as it becomes available.
...Which means sometime between today and when hell freezes over.

Most likely a what-if for afterstory of Fate route. I guess?  Someone here pointed out that when they meet in afterstory, Shirou might as well end looking similar to Archer [with his magic altering his appearance etc].
The prompt was a request, so it's a pretty open story for interpretation.

What did you think about the art for Unlimited Blade Works?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

shuu-washuu In reply to schattenman005 [2015-04-07 11:16:40 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, he's the most prominently featured in UBW. One of his most epic fights, and his most epic death definitely.  I still think Heaven's Feel might have been a better choice for ufotable tv series  [as they introduced many people to the franchize with Fate/Zero, and HF seems to connect best as direct continuation of FZ ], but since UBW is filled with a lot of awesome moments that just beg "animate us!" I'm not complaining

I've watched Durarara in the winter season, and while I enjoyed it imminently, the difference of art and animation quality is astounding. When I started watching new UBW episode I got reminded how almost cinema-animated-movie like quality it has.  I'm really happy that ufotable is handling Fate anime. Have you heard they said that if UBW reaches a certain level of BD-sales they will most likely animated Hollow Ataraxia? I wonder how will THAT work, haha.

schattenman005 In reply to shuu-washuu [2015-04-09 16:19:18 +0000 UTC]

Actually, doing UBW may just be the buildup for that series. That's why it's probably in a more movie format.

I think UBW topped a lot more, probably making it one of the top five probably IMO.

Really? That would be awesome! Hoping to see Bazett in action since she's actually a favorite of mine. What would you expect from the series if they make it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

shuu-washuu In reply to schattenman005 [2015-04-11 09:50:50 +0000 UTC]

Still Heavens Feel is kinda too long for a movie. There was done UBW movie before, and it was super rushed. Oh well hopefully it will be a prelude for that route getting it's series too.

Honestly I don't know what to expect from Hollow Ataraxia, as I haven't yet played the game. They finished translating it only recently, and I've been too busy to get started with it. But I've understood it had some sord of time loop going on, where several days are getting repeated. I'm really curious how they handle this is in anime adaptation.
