Description Entry to the 2011 DA Birthday Skribble Contest -

A late-model strata extractor mining rig, seen here in service on Riz IV. Mechanized rigs specialized for hazardous environments, like Consolidated Stellar's CL-3, are a necessity in the hellish, abyssal mine and cavern networks on 'dead' worlds in the distant Outer Belt.

Well, looks like they've picked their semifinalists [link] . No surprise with the lackluster selection as usual. It seems as if they had some sort of quota for entries that contained one-eyed robots, sea monsters, DA mascots, and women with bad hair days.

One of the stronger entries I've seen so far. Quite a few others currently in the most popular pages have succeeded in color palette, material rendering, or composition, but they never seem to have all of those simultaneously.

Any chance you have a thumbnail or rough sketch of the entire mining rig around?

Thanks! I did a few rough sketches of the machine around the scribble lines, but for the most part it evolved as I painted. If I get a chance though, I have been thinking of putting more of my process drawings up so it could be a good opportunity.

Wow this is amazing, truly a unique way to incorporate the scribbles and I am so envious of you I cannot do this amount of detail especially when drawing mechanics you are a master indeed.

Thanks for the kind words - for me mechanical and technical subjects have always been a bit easier than people or animals, so I really admire your character art!
