scratchboards are like the opposite of pencil drawings. You draw on a black board using a sharp tool such as a knife and it exposes white lines under the black surface.

I understand that part but how do you get the color? If you color it with colored pencils wont it scratch the black part off more?

No, I color it with inks. When it dries, then I can apply more layer of inks on top of it. It does not get dissolved when dry.
