Description The other half of the "depicting change" assignment, in which I attempted to use the time of day to show the house in another light (lawl pun!). I always make up stories about my work since I get to sit in front of these pieces for so long, for this one I was all about witches and halloweeny stuff. And I wondered if the people who lived there ever noticed me perched in the window across the street staring at their house til four in the morning for several nights in a row... : D

By the time I was done with this, everything in my room was covered in a light dusting of charcoal. It still hasn't all come off my poor laptop, and I imagine theres a good solid layer of it caked up in the bottom of my lungs by now. (On that note, it's a terrifying thing to sneeze after working on one of these!)

Tools: Charcoal pencils, arches coverstock white (Again, fancy paper that is all lovely and nice)

What's best about this is how it's softly shaded and the white parts look like there's a light on, and the position of the trees makes it look like there's a storm going on.

I think you showed the change very well. It looks more like a haunted house now that would give rise to those stories about the inhabitants. It still holds that warmth though.

Your understanding of light is amazing. The trees look like lightning, and the tones on the walk and the porch create the eerie atmosphere. I love it.

Was this a subtractive drawing, where you start off filling the entire paper with charcoal and then erase to create the drawing? I had an assignment very similar to this, this semester that was also about change

Beautiful.

Your use of texture, lighting, and shading, is really phenomenal in this piece. It really creates a dark, lonely, and rather scary atmosphere.

I also like the view of the house through the tree-branches. It is as if we were put into the eyes of a raven flying near an abandoned house. Did you imagine it that way?

In fact, I really like both pieces: the daylight and nighttime one. The contrasting atmosphere in both pieces is very interesting and cool to see. Just goes to show what a little light can do to change the atmosphere!

Well done.

The shading and all of those details are done so beautifully. I deffinetely don't have that kind of skill with charcoal.

This effect is great--do you lift out the white parts with an erasor/paper/etc, or do you try to leave them blank from the start?

Wow, you stayed hours on this, 7 nights in a row?
how can you see what your drawing? its all in the dark
I kept on trying to draw drawings with alot of details with light but i find it very dificult, especially if it means drawing what you want when you and the object are in the dark.
I wish i can draw as good as you....

I can't help it, since I never studied art formally myself, I'm always curious about the work assignments so I enjoy you sharing this with us a great deal. Thank you!

I honestly looked at this and thought "this has to be photomanipulation" and since it's not, you did a wonderful job! The trees look really realistic, and with charcoal, it's amazing it's so clear. As much as you can get charcoal to be clear.

A little informal critique - The bricks on the sidewalk doesn't seem to be in perspective but that could just be my eyes.

Ha. It's a good kind of hurt when you take a breath after working with charcoal for hours and your throat it feels really scratchy. XD

Well. Not that good.

But this is awesome. You have some really realistic lighting here, and those branches definitely look creepy~ Great work!
