Description Making of little brown bowl.

It was fun to try out a technique that I only had used for real clay before. It worked out fine but the hardening in the oven -bit was tricky. If you are a beginner maybe you shouldn't try & burn the house down ! I actully put the ½ ball in the oven with the clay so the bowl would stay nice and round. The ½ ball shrunk to pieces in the oven. So it was a one-time-only thing. Of course I might do it again.. I just need to go to the arts'n crafts store to buy another styrox ball to shrink...

Great tutorial! Two questions, though: Does the paper make a noticeable impression on the inside of the bowl? And does the Styrofoam melt/burn/do something freaky? Thanks!

Thank you There is a tiny impression on the insides of the bowl, but it's pretty smooth. The styrofoam does "become smaller" in the oven, so you can't use it twice for the same thing.

Ok, thanks! And as long as the styrofoam doesn't explode/melt I'll live lol!

Ohh..bread dough type of thing. Maybe that "salty" dough that you can make yourself...hmm.

The bowl is made of FIMO clay. google it if you want to know more.

Great tutorial! yeah styrafoam shrinks with the heat.. its one of those "disolvable" armatuers.. just a question.. does the remaining styro stick to your clay after baking?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shiritsu In reply to flapd00dle [2007-08-09 16:48:45 +0000 UTC]

Nope. It suprisingly didn't stick to the clay.

no problem you are a great artist!!! i was thinking on buying Fimo but im not sure if its like sculpey but then again I've never used any of them before. If I buy Fimo/Sculpey what tools would I need?

Shiritsu In reply to agentgingerbread [2007-02-24 08:59:31 +0000 UTC]

No tools needed. Just use your hands A knife & a needle are good but you can do without aswell.

reminds me of the time i took ceramics... we kind of did the same thing... exept the ceramic clay hardens and the bowl comes out easily.

Yup exactly

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kuukan In reply to Shiritsu [2007-02-22 23:39:30 +0000 UTC]

but then, I have to admit that polymer clay is so much easier to sculpt with... ^ ^;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shiritsu In reply to kuukan [2007-02-23 08:33:40 +0000 UTC]

Yeah but when making big bowls and things it is so much easier to use real clay because polymer clay costs more and is not necessarely suitable to use as a real bowl or cup.

Ah yes. When I first started making fimo things my mom was scared that it would be poisonous & dangerous to use the oven (where we cook real food!) for my sculptures.

Oh well. It's been a year and now she's ok with it all. I've never had to clean the oven etc. because of fimo. It's not messy at all.

Shiritsu In reply to RachiieRawr [2007-02-22 20:21:25 +0000 UTC]

Not messy at all. I do the clay stuff in my room and then just go to the kitchen for the hardening-part. Nothing messy about that. It doesn't melt or..whatever. Baking & cooking overall is more messy

Surf garage sales and get a small conventional oven just for clay
