Artist's CommentsWell, with my college bursary not going very well right now, I needed some time to focus on something else. Long term watchers will know what getting to college means to me, but at the moment it's not looking promising that I'm going to get there, which will absolutely devastate me.
My original plan with this was to draw all SWF's Orcas, Tilikum, Katina, Kayla, Nalani, Malia, Trua and Makaio, but I went with just painting Katina, Makaio and Kayla, as it would have overcrowded the piece. And because I was too lazy.
This was mainly for anatomy practice to correct some errors I've been doing before. I'm 99% sure I've corrected them in this piece, I'm extremely proud of it and worked on all the details for a long time. It was just one of those paintings where everything went right for me, and I didn't get bored of it.
It's about time Aquanova found some friends and I love the Orlando Orca family, so I've decided to make her friends with them.
Please no captivity debates, I drew them out in the open sea because Aqua is not in captivity.

All these colors and details:
Your grasp of orca anatomy is definitely improving with each subsequent freeform painting. Both in terms of accurate shapes, and placement. Aquanova looks better with each iteration I've seen.
Only two small errors catch my eye here, which are more evident to me now, than they were in the outline, because they are colored.

I know. Pectoral fins are a pain. Even I guesstimate with each new painting as to how big they should be.
One has to do with both Katina (whose eyepatch could be bigger and more oval-like in shape) and Makaio. Their eyes/eyepatches/blowholes seem to be placed a little too far back on their faces. Whereas on Kayla it's placed just right, their 'noses' just seem a little long for it.
The second is what I mentioned before, Makaio's flank patch should be a bit further forward.

I did enlarge the pecs a little from the lineart
I closely looked at photos on orca homepage regarding the eyepatches to where they start and end, and personally I'm happy with Katina's and Makaio's as I payed a lot of attention to those. Maybe I did just draw Katina's nose slightly too long which throws that off a bit. But I don't think it's by much

The lineart being so much smaller compared to the final painting, I guess I missed that. My bad.
As I said, these are minor errors. Considering the difference between our styles, maybe they aren't errors at all. Just me thinking "I'd do that differently" or some such rationalizing.
Oh. I meant, further up his belly, closer to the middle of his body, not further up his side. Sorry about that.
