In college I was asked to draw different action poses of a character of my own design. Taking a few poses I found out of a sports magazine, I drew my character Shen Lo Ken in these positions.I gotta laugh at the one on the bottom. It looks liek he's playing a vigorous game of soccer. (Or as my Brit friends call it 'Football'.) Actually that was taken from 'American' foortball photo, I just took the football out of there. Although it might've helped more.
So far my classes are going well. When asked how I came up with Shen, I did not mention the Crash Bandicoot series of the past. I merely said I took the name of a video game character and a Disney character and dropped them into a hat to pick the names at random. I drew Street Fighter's Ryu and Disney's Robin Hood. Then I meshed the two together. XD That's what I told my class anyway.
If you also notice, Shen has a pants leg torn off. Three years ago I made a Kingdom Hearts suit for him involving one of his pant legs missing and his arms and legs bandaged with fighter's wrap. I liked the idea better than just leaving him in his traditional gi. So I gave him that for this assignment.
Also, this is the younger version of Shen. Today he's about 41. This is Shen back when he was around 23. (Before his daughter Sharon would be born.)

Yes I did. It was part ofthe assignment picking from different pictures for my pose for the character. A hurdle jump was one ofthem and it indeed is that one.

Thank you very much. ^^ I worked alot on his poses and am studying the muscles structures to make his build look more real. Sometimes I regret using human feet for him; since big paws might suit him better. But if I did that then I would forget how to draw human feet. XD It happens too often; I do too much of one thing I forget the other.

Well we'll just see. I need to apply first. Luckily I have had experience with film before; I currently work for a film company. A show by me will probably not be the result of my internship. However, working with them long enough might give me an edge to pitch a shw to them. So you never know.

A-friggin-mazing! Forget the fact that being my bro means you get top priority in comments, this picture literally made me drop everything I was doing. It's so awesome! Interesting how your two fav male characters (Sin and Shen) have starred in quite possibly your best pics. The also start and end with the same letter (SheN and SiN)
I LOVE THE FACES! Faces are what's most important to me, beyond everything else. No matter how good an anatomy or pose, the face and expression for me will always come first! And what a trio! It's like you're exponentially getting better at it, bro! I love (and maybe feel a wee bit jealous of
Hah hah, and I had forgotten that Shen was so old. For being 40, he sure has taken good care of his body. It's really nice to see him like a young'un. He sure had spunk back then, and it's clear to see it was all inherited by Sharon. The anatomy is simply superb, and made even more amazing by the poses.
Note: I do NOT ever ever want to hear you downplay yourself because you used a model for a drawing. I swear I'll give you a spanking if you ever do that. I'm serious, bro. People tend to actually act debasing/contemptuous over drawings done by models, as if in some way it was lesser to a pic done all out of mind; that's completely wrong. So you be proud of your art, model or no, don't ever think less about yourself. I've never been more serious, little bro.
The poses are wonderful, very dynamic and so full of energy. The foreshortening and the fluidity leaves me drooling, bro. But the way you drew the muscles is the best! They all flow and move with the scene!
The shading works with the clothing and the muscles incredibly well. It's a very defined shading style you used, but not enough to look like cell-shading. It's still fuzzy enough to give it a sense of realism. If you do make a larger pic sometime, might I suggest trying to make the shadows fluffier? Remember he's got fur all over his body ;D
Heh, I liked that you used the KH gi instead of the usual. It makes him more personal, with a hint of fantastic flavour. That's really one of the things I admired of KH, the ability to add in a new sense to a character, even if it's wearing normal clothing.
All in all, awesome work. I'm proud, and you should be, too. Heh, and sorry for the scolding back there, I hope you understand why I wanted to be firm about it.

Well thank you bro. Although I might say the heads are somewhat a bit larger than they should be, I am pretty proud with the expressions too. Even though Iam happy you like my eyes, I still feel I can improve on them better. After all, what part of the face other than your smile can express so much more than your eyes. But then again, sometimes I fall into the "anime Trap" where eyes are big and sometimes expressionless. =-p
Shen is quite active. Even though when Sharon was born and he retired from demon hunting, he still kept physically fit; him and his brother. Sharon does inherit Shen's spunk and strength, but she also inherits her mother's bold and independent attitude.Sometime I gotta draw a transaction between Naomi and Shen to let ya know what I mean.
Oh dear bro! You think I was downplaying myself? O.o On account of the model? Well gee bro I think you may have jumped too soon. Maybe you saw my comment on the third pose where I might've added the football. Actually bro that was cause I felt the class would have connected with it more. Seing him running with the football might've helped generate a more playful atmosphere to the class. Other people in the class drew ninjas and warriors and stuff and still included the football. I gotta say, there would have been no harm and perhaps a more resonate attitude with Shen carrying the football.
As far as using live models I am not downplaying myself at all bro. Far from it I think it works spectacularlly. The only challenge is to make sure all characters drawn fro mthe model do not end up looking the same as the model. I am proud that I pulled it off with Shen. ?In fact his muscles are what I am proud of cause it helped me understand anatomy too.
Shading wise again bro is something I strive to work harder on. Cell shading fur is not exactly that eas. I can look at MYazaki films all day and still gives me a headache to know where thel ight direction is. Perhaps since it is not there I cannot actually visualize the shadows. In this case bro, I sketched the shadows onto the drawing and then used it as a guide. It seems to be a more effective way than just guessing. As far as cell shading of fur goes, I'llwork on it bro.
KH has that magic touch. Lookit what they did to Cloud. They made him look even more bad ass by slapping a cape and a wing on him. So I did the same for Shen. Even though in real life, people would think you're a dork for wearing pants with one leg missing. (Unless you were at a rave.) but I've yet to meet someone who would call Shen a dork in front of his face. ^>^

Thanks. That bottom pose is one Iam particularlly proud of as well. Physics are such a bother sometimes when compiling the anatomy of your character. I'm glad you enjoy Shen and Sin both sis. ^^ They are definite hits in the fangirl kingdom I see. Hope to go farther with that. ^^
True both young and old still look the same. The only difference so far is hair. Shen's hair is shorter here. In the 41 year old versions he has a mullet. I need to readjust his features a little ot indicate age.

Weeee! Shen! *hug* I have not seen this guy inabsolutely ages, mate. Next to Sin, Shen is my second favourite character of yours and oh my goodness, he does not look and more handsome than he already is. Actually the feeling I have at this moment is not that of being 'impressed' with the poses, but more or less; I'm proud o.O.
Yes, I am very, very proud of you here, because not only have you been able to come up with 3 very attractive poses, but I'm proud of the way you've coloured, drawn (even though you copied them), inked, shaded, and most of all, proud of the way your art style has actually improved,. What ever books you've been reading or what classes you've been taking, they have most certainly done the job. Like I said, Shen does not look any more handsome.
I just love everything about him right here, but I can't help but notice his iddy-biddy toes! Oh my goodness, how I cannot draw human feet. That top one has got to be my favourite of all the poses you've done, the way the right leg is bending back like that exposing his thigh like that is brilliantly done. Not only that but the background brings out his bodies better. Your way of colouring, shading AND drawing has definately improved over the past 5 months.
Just looking at Shen here just wants me to take him and dunk him in my tea

Toes gvie you probs eh Jenny? Well sometimes I preferred your way of drawing Shen's feet. The big fox like paws actually flesh him out better I find. (I still got those pics you did of him for me.
Classes have definitely helped Jenny. I been drawing live models for years and learning how to gesture and shade accordingly.
It's true, he still doesn't look any different from his 41 year old counterpart. His 41 year old version has a mullet. =-p I am working on his features to indicate his age. Glad you like him alot Jenny. ^^ Seems like he's among other people's fave male char of mine too; second only to Sin. ^.^ There is a story behind that pant leg. It was part of the gi presented to him by his master. In the conflict that ook his master's life, and almost his brother's, Shen was mauled at by the demon he was fighting. It barely missed him but tore off his pant leg in the process. When Shota died, Shen still kept his gi and never fixed it as memory of the day he lost his master; swearing to live up to his name and honor any battle he entered for him. (Although I hate to say this; I hope Shen wouldn't have done that if he lost his whole pants. O.o_
I had to lie a little bout his explanation. Can you imagine the reaction from the college friends of mine if I told them "Shen was created at a Crash Bandicoot message board as a karate fighting fox who trained Crash and coco to be like Super Saiyains"? I can tell you they'd be looking at me like I was a three eyed giant lobster. XD
It's OK to stetch the truth in your art sometimes.
This technique will be used in my comic pages I hope to produce soon. I have the knowledge and equipment. Even more so; m y friend is going to give me her version of Painter. ^____^ (This will be used for backgrounds.) Thanks so much for the fave, and the fan love for Shen Lo Ken.
