So this is a super long overdue entry for my own exchange, ShinXChange . Unfortunately, I had some super horribad prioritization when I picked this up. I only had this image and one personal image on my plate and I thought "I will do my exchange after my personal image" and then I drew the Shinerai picture that I totally didn't intend to spend 100 hours on.

I thought about stopping in the middle to do this one but I was so fed up with my hard drive dying and the monotony of the Shin picture that I was afraid I'd never come back to it if I stopped. Of course this isn't an excuse for being late on my own exchange, but it is a little bit of an explanation.

The character pictured belongs to Ardengrail and has the same name. She is super cute and has a relatively simple design, so I thought I would try to stop failing at Copic markers to give her a try. But the ShinXChange requires at least a simple background, so I couldn't leave the BG blank; thinking of this scene was almost as hard as illustrating it.

I think this is the best Copic piece I've done so far, if you've seen the other things in my gallery. I still have a long way to go, but I learned many things. what I learned is to start out with the light color and layer your shadows darker and darker onto it. It's easy if you do your first layer of shadows using the same color you laid your flats with. It'll still darken the color but not so much that it's intimidating. The reason it's easier to start lighter is that you can keep adding colors all day long as much as you want. Just keep getting darker and darker and darker with it. I like to get some of my dark details carved in and then if I feel like my shadows are getting too blotchy, I'll take a lighter color and just go over the whole thing with a big shadow. It'll blend the dark colors a bit and you can crispen your details with even darker colors after that. You can use all kinds of shades too, just go crazy with the shades. I have some green and blue and yellow on that tree.

I guess, what I'm trying to say, is that I learned if you start light you can just keep layering the Copics as much as you want and as long as your paper can handle the markers without getting wavy, you don't have to hold back. Just keep pushing the colors around until you like them.

omg what a CUTIE little dragon! I've never actually tried copics, but I have a nice set of Prisamas that seem to work the same way you've described. I'm surprised at all the little details you were able to color in like the dirt and the lichen, how big is this picture irl? I find that my marker tips are too large for really small detail work, I usually go in with fine tip sharpies.

Why wasn't this in my inbox?? Thanks DA.

Aaaaaah i love this!! the colors with the copics look great. So vibrant. The shading of the tree looks particularly nice. And the grass is so fluffy. Cute fluffy grass matches a cute little dragon.

The only thing i would "critique" here is that the berries in the grass don't look like they are in the grass, they appear to be like in a layer over the drawing to me.

Thank you very much for the compliments, hon!
And thank you for the critique! I think if I draw the grass 'bending' under the fruit next time, with the shape of the fruit partially obscured it will help. Or the shape of whatever object is in/on the grass. xD What do you think?

Lucky-phantom In reply to Shinerai [2014-10-20 16:04:38 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that could work fine! Maybe also adding some grass in front of the fruity thing would also help to give it some depth.

I dont think I saw this one pop up in my inbox! Super cute, I have always admired your copic skills. that background is super too c:  I love the way you did the mountains, they look awesome, yet simple at the same time. Small details like the moss on that tree root are just epic and really add to this picture. The longer I look at it, the more i love it. Keep up the good work!

What a cutie QoQ
You've got a really cool style to color with copics, and I really like those mountains in the background...the way of coloring reminds me of 80s animes
The only thing that confuses me slightly is the grass. Drawing it like fur has a very cool effect, but I'm wondering if these berries are floating on top of the grass? Because it looks like that because they're barely covered by it.
But its still awesome(and I kept looking rather long onto it xD).

Shinerai In reply to Hyracaia [2014-09-18 02:53:18 +0000 UTC]

Awe thank you so much for the compliments!
The grass is my main disappointment on this picture because it just was the most difficult thing ever to draw xD I think the problem is that next time I should actually sketch the grass before coloring it with the copics (I did the lines last). I'll definitely try a different approach next time haha.

Hyracaia In reply to Shinerai [2014-09-18 07:47:59 +0000 UTC]

Penzone [2014-09-17 12:31:01 +0000 UTC]

It's very beautiful c: and natural looking too with a relaxed pose, the only thing I noticed was it looked like the dragon lies on the grass rather than in the grass xD a very little notice though since I love the picture!

Shinerai In reply to Penzone [2014-09-18 01:20:52 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much! ;u;
that grass really kicked my ass and is totally the thing that I need to work on the most. The most difficult part of this picture is that I did the lineart last so I was just freehanding the grass D: it looks horrible.

Penzone In reply to Shinerai [2014-09-18 08:07:59 +0000 UTC]

Why no problems shin c: and don't beat down on yourself xD it still looks very nice, it's not easy to be an artist adept in so many forms of visual art as you are!

Yeah strawberries can be so hit/miss and so can blackberries ): but I really love blackberries

Antaria-Nova In reply to Shinerai [2014-09-19 08:33:58 +0000 UTC]

Well, what with living in Finland, with plenty of forests with blackberries, at least in my opinion it's more often hit with blackberries than miss.
Also, white chocolate with blackberries? Or a muffin covered in white chocolate and blackberries inside.

Oh god yes.

Going to the store when hungry and NOT coming out with several bags of assorted foods you really don't need takes some discipline.

Also, not very far there's a cafeteria that has some ridiculously awesome muffins. Not to mention everything else.
They're huge (as in bigger than the fist of anyone not the size of a fully grown male gorilla), they're deeeeeeeelicious, and they look the part.
I'm planning on going there sometime in the next few days and see how their cronuts are. I've been meaning to try one of those since I heard someone had combined the two tasty pastries into one delicious new hybrid superpastry.

Shinerai In reply to Antaria-Nova [2014-09-22 02:17:28 +0000 UTC]

Haha yeah you're right! My solution is to not get a basket or a cart. Only buy the items you can carry xD
Man you MUST tell me how the cronut is. It's difficult for my mind to even fathom!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Antaria-Nova In reply to Shinerai [2014-09-22 08:55:13 +0000 UTC]

I will. Tomorrow I'll go there, since I've got other business nearby as well.
There was actually a comparison review on 3 different cronuts in the newspaper was it last week or so.
They thought that Arnold's had the best cronut, but only slightly, while Cafe Brahe (the cafeteria I mentioned) has them bigger and actually hand-made.

Shinerai In reply to Antaria-Nova [2014-09-26 01:15:38 +0000 UTC]

Did you go there?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Antaria-Nova In reply to Shinerai [2014-09-26 10:57:44 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. The white-chocolate-covered and vanilla-cream filled ones are fantastic, the chocolate-covered-and-filled ones are not as good. And I also took a apple-nougat muffin (approximately as big as both my fists put together), which was also fantastic.
So delicious and moist.~

I hope you got the reference.

Antaria-Nova In reply to Shinerai [2014-09-27 11:37:52 +0000 UTC]

It's a reference to Portal (A great, humorous sci-fi game by Valve. There's also Portal 2, which continues the great humor and general awesomeness of the original, with the added option for a co-op plot that works on the side of the single-player one.)
, or more precisely, the "Portal End Song", actual name of that being "Still Alive". Here's a link to it. And a fun Portal-themed video. That guy has loads of nice ones.
Enjoy!

I would suggest Argleblarp...

Anyone who's read DItD knows what I speak of. It's a nickname by a hatchling for his human stepmother(kind of), Amaleen that he used persistently because it annoyed the hell out of her.

Primarily suggest this as this (really, top notch!) image reminded me of that despite the coloration difference.
