Description
This is (or was supposed to be) a sketch for . He had helped me find the recording of La Valse that I was looking for (thank you!) and requested female in armour. This is no character in particular, but I liked the outcome (though it doesn't look like what I wanted it to look like) and enjoyed being able to draw elaborate and impractical designs again, so I decided to up it even though it's a scrap.And the title doesn't have relation to anything, the RO character title just hit me as appropriate when I was naming it.

the sketch is in pencil; the special effects and gray tones are done with photoshop quickly after scanning

Looks okay, I'd recommend a more sweaty/tired look judging off of the overall asthetic of the piece. Perhaps messier looking hair and spots of dirt.
Should also cut down on all the dangly things and pointless cool looking do-dads or atleast give the character a fuller suit of armor. I don't have anything against the general idea, its really just the open belly thats off. (Really, simply because the character is a trained combatant, so there is a certain level of professionalism that needs to be met) A good way to avoid that would be to design the character in layers: (1) chainmail, (2) platemail, (3) capes/scarfs if wanted, (4) Other.

yeah most of my things go towards the aesthetic side more than the realistic side ): posed/overdressed situations etc and lacking ruggedness. I tend to do it because I like it that way but I will keep your advices in mind when I want to go for a look that makes sense!

I've noticed, over the past couple of years, that the best way to make something believable but unique is to take something real, such as a 1300 AD French Crusader, and "season it" to make it original. All it requires is some research. (Which can be good fun if you're really into the subject)
A good example would be the Legion soliders from The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. They're based off Roman soliders but still look original; and a trained eye can still spot a good deal of historical accuracies.
I"ve used this tactic for three years now and it's never once let me down.
