felt project from my textile class last yearseriously one of the most fun projects i've done

well it kinda takes over an hour to do one of them lol.....
and i'm not really sure how to describe the process without actually showing you

ok well um
you need these like big thick yarns of corriedale fibers and you pull off small sections between your four fingers and bottom of your palm and lay down each section in like little overlaying carpets all facing one way for one layer on top of a sheet of bubble wrap which is on top of a bamboo place mat. and then you do the same thing over top of that layer but in the opposite direction (if you laid them vertically, lay them horizontally). do this for at least 4 layers or more if you want it thicker. once you have that laid down you put a fine mesh over top of it and pour on boiling water and a mild detergent (like hardwood floor soap). push down with the moisture and lather/agitate the fibers under the mesh with rubber gloves on, pushing down hard and rubbing in small circles and back and forth all around, adding more boiling water and soap until all of the fibers are wet and agitated. do this for about 15 minutes. take off the mesh and lay another piece of bubble wrap on top of it, roll it up and squeeze it over a sink. roll it up in a towel and STOMP THAT BITCH FOR HALF AN HOUR. seriously stop it so hard (TIP: wear shoes). after half an hour, unroll, turn the piece 90 degrees and roll it back up. stomp on it for another half hour. repeat another two times. once done, lay flat to dry. once dry, cut the edges straight with pinking sheers; cut off the thin parts.
also the piece shrinks considerably from when you lay down the fibers to when you finish it
and if you want to lay down designs on it like i did, you need to put down a very very fine web of fiber over top of it or else it will just fall off.
