Is this part of that plastic straw ban bs?

Though to be fair they are apparently working on non-plastic replacements.

I agree though. I have no idea why, out if the hundreds of completely useless plastic items, wrappings and whatever, we have to ban the one item that is useful.

The only things I can think of that could replace the plastic straw are wood or metal. Wood runs the risk of splinters coming off and liquids being absorbed in its walls. Metal would probably be too heavy, and magnets could be a problem, along with rust and heat transfer. Both would be more costly and heavier than the plastic straw, which is lighter, cleaner, cheaper, safer, and can flex (bendy straws, anyone?).

The funny thing is that there are places (in England, I think) that have gone back to the plastic straw's predecessor, the paper straw. The problems with the paper straw include its vulnerability to liquids, the very real possibility of dissolving and getting sucked up, and its inability to poke through a plastic lid.

Also, these environmentalists who want paper straws to replace plastic ones may not realize how many more trees would have to be harvested to keep up with the demand, which then goes against their messages of conserving the forests. It's almost like they didn't think through their argument and take it to its logical conclusion.

near me about 98% have gone to paper. honestly i get 2 min into my coffee [iced] and the straw is already falling appart. it tastes horrible too. the whole reason i bought the coffee is just gone now. so i just order the hot one so i dont need a straw or i use the stir straw ones [bleh cant taste the coffee normally]. it is THE WORST move we could ever do. even worse..some places wrap the paper straw in........PLASTIC. here is a novel idea....figure out how to purify plastic straws, melt them and re cast them into useful stuff like more straws. i mean it would save us the headache. the coffee shop near my work actually keeps a stash of straws for me to get when im there. they shove it in my bag of food so no one sees it.

A better idea I've read about are... slightly more durable plastic straws.

From my understanding, the EU ban is about "single-use plastic items", which current straws fall under. So instead of not making them plastic, another strategy would be: Make them not single-use.

So maybe we'll see something that looks more those loopy party straws ( www.amazon.com/Silly-Crazy-Str… ) in the future that you can clean and reuse or bring back to the store.

Cafes here are experimenting with hard plastic to-go coffee cup ("ReCup") that works that way. Maybe there will be ReStraws in the future...

I don't get how they figure threatening to fine restuaurnts for providing straws will save the world.

I see people throwing away literally HUNDREDS of plastic bags or worse just leaving them on the ground every damn day at my job. I doubt starting a war on straws will help anything.

And while she does that, she will glare at the cashier the whole time. Not to turn him into stone, just to make him uncomfortable.
