The anime is not as well done as the manga in terms of the art. However, the ending to the anime is the better ending (not to mention that the second part of the manga was stopped). I recomend the the anime, but not the manga, because it's going to leave you so heartbroken.
Shinpachi is soooooooo adorable! Especially in the manga! I also like Sano and Heisuke, but Heisuke quit Shinsengumi, that was the sadest thing ever... I mean Heisuke! The guy that loved little cute things! He said a bunch of mean things to Shinpachi and Sano and then just quit! Unbelieveble! Shinpachi however is the kind that have fun when it's the time, and gets serious when he has to, one of my favorite characters from the show. Well, it's actually a good thing that the manga stopped, because the truth is that Shinsengumi didn't survive, and most of its members either quit or died, I guess it better stop before things like that happenes.
Hmm... one more thing, the translation of the name is soooooo bad! gosh! It means the exact opposite of what the original name is! I mean one is peacemaker, and the other is Shinsengumi~!

after you read the first one you get emotionally attached to the characters and in the second one, they wound up quiting, leaving, and dying. also the second one has no ending, the author quit before she could kill some of the most popular characters.
