I'm so with you there for the longest time I thought the Octo pods a.k.a. the octo minons in octo valley were the males of the octo spieces and the octolings were the female

well, Octavio was sorta the only male remained... but then again, we don't really know since we didn't see what's their society like away from battling inklings. We don't see any civillians, plus most of octarians we encounter seem to be severed sentient tentacles. I always thought that most of men octolings died in turf wars and the rest is heavily guarded by mobilized female population to simply not die out
