In the anthology of verse, Lifelines, the poet Peter Fallon gave the following reason for choosing the Hail Mary as his 'favourite' of all verses:-

"Perhaps in this case, I am asking that familiar words be reconsidered, thought about again. Thousands of times I've heard the 'Hail Mary' transformed into, at best, a kind of mantra, at worst, the sound of no sense. Yet the words are lovely in their pure praise of a woman, a mother - maybe all women - and the phrase which has always delighted me, that us 'the fruit of thy womb', for an offspring, a welcomed child, has again and again been submerged in the interminable decades of a million galloping rosaries. One thoughtful recitation of this prayer would be worth those millions..."

I cannot fault Fallon on his reasoning, and he puts it so much better than I ever could. I was deeply surprised when I saw the wealth of Catholic stamps out there on dA - and not one actually reciting the Hail Mary. This is a very meagre attempt to fill that space - and I'm sure many others could do much better - but this will do, for now.
