Well....hm....it depends on what style you're going for. You can do realistic character designs, and then you can do totally shape driven ones. This one...is more in between. Im not sure if it completely works or not lol. Its really just something you gotta play with. You eventually get a feel for it.

LUMMOX! Oh man, that is such a fantastic word. I get excited by things like that lolz.
Thank you! I really like how his body shape came out. I love when I draw things and I only have a slight idea of how I want it to turn out because then I allow myself to make happy mistakes that turn into good things. It just...flows. Its fun!

Aw, it's so cute! And, come one. Some things need to be the same size.
I really like the shape, here! To me I think he's a medium sized dragon. It suits, I think. Good job with the head stuff, too! Not to dominating on the design, but still quite nice.

Medium sized? Yeah, I can see that. See, I think that's the problem...it is interpreted different ways and were this designed for a client that would be a problem. Even though its not for a client, I should be designing these as if there were a client. But thank you!

I don't know if I agree with everything your class said, sometimes people's personal prefs for design get mixed in with what would look better for a general design for a particular piece. I noticed that in my portfolio classes. I like mythical creatures but some of the people in my class didn't. Because they thought dragons were representations of evil. So they had nothing nice to say about a european style dragon I made. (the bulky chest kind with thick body, two wings, four legs.) Others that liked dragons and stuff said things that were basically their personal prefs of what they would have drawn and how they think dragons should look. But as for tweaking it, its always good to try new things. I agree that maybe you should play with it in photoshop. Make the changes you, yourself think should happen, and then tweak some versions of what your teacher and calssmates like. Then look at them all side by side and get a better idea of what you have going on.
I like that you made a asian-type body style instead of the usual european look floating around most places. I think the thick stocky legs with the noodly body gives it personality, kinda like he is baggy or saggy in some areas. Or just really manly lol. The head I did have a problem with. I think I see what you mean by you saw in your mind a big dragon, I see the broad upper skull area and the small eyes always make something seem bigger and lumbering when connected to bulky heads. I like the way the smaller lower jaw gives him an expression of doofy joy or something. But it may be the shortness of the lower jaw that disrupts the rest of the head. Ears may help with the biggness or smallness you are trying to portray. Small ears could help him look bulkier or long then ears make him look more nimble. If you don't want to use ears, maybe black with hair tufts or skale growths. I think it could help add some more character to the overall design if you implimented some things like that. I don't know if you should make the wings bigger, I personally like them at that size. I think to make them any bigger it might run the risk of taking out the curving arch of the back. And I think you already have them flarred at a good angle for the pose. But eh, its only my personal view. I'd like to see what you end up doing with this. I love the colors and the concept that you have already started for this piece.

You know..DA sucks right now. I rewrote my post and fixed my spaz hand mistakes and made more sense of some places. But then DA crapped out on me. And sent the retard version of my post. *sigh* At least it didn't double post like I was afraid it did. Just ask if anything I said didn't make sense. *grumbles* I'm going to try TRY to look at your other pictures...blah!

I can agree with some of the issues I guess, but it's so durn cute I didn't care. I saw him as a big guy, though I'd love to shrink him down to ferret-size and have him on my shoulder or something, haha. I liked how there are elements of both eastern and western dragons in him, too.
Hooray for branching out!
