Description This is a picture I painted for my brother, based on various album covers for the music project Ayreon. The originals are by the belgian painter Jef Bertels. This cannot compete at all but I still like the outcome and it was lots of fun to paint.

Edit 23.05.11: Finally uploaded higher quality version. If anyone would like it in a particular resolution feel free to ask me for it.

I've been thinking of experimenting
in this style as well, Bretels has an amazing sense of scale and distance

You should give it a try, it's a lot of fun! Obviously this one's several years old by now and I'd improve a lot of things and just... add more (I was in a hurry to gift it to someone back then ^^), but it's great for just experimenting with a new set of paints, for example If you give it a try, be sure to let me know so I can take a look!

I'm actually working on something right now! I only have some crappy phone quality photos, and I feel that it may be rude if I were to just post them here, on your own comment thread :S

Thank you so much, and greetings to you as well

I'll try to make some more Ayreon-related art (or Arjen - I really love Lost in the New Real) soon, especially since people subscribe to me just for this picture - again, thank you

..alright, I'll give it a try - have some patience, because I'll be busy catching up on loads of paintings now I have some free time, but it's definitely among the top of my list. I'll do my best

This is so awesome! How long did it take and what did you use for it?
Seriously, I really like this. Very atmospheric and I like the spikes and how everything seems to hover over a sea of clouds. Fantastic job!

Shasera In reply to Morphy1397 [2011-04-09 14:05:25 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much!
I used acrylic colors on canvas, painting most of the background using a lot of water so I could make the colors 'melt' into each other more easily. Then I added the darker details and finished with some bright ones like the stars and the fog-like whites. It actually didn't take very long, I think I finished it in one or two days, and I recall listening to three albums so I guess 3-6 hours might be a good guess.
You're a fan of Ayreon?

Morphy1397 In reply to Shasera [2011-04-09 14:18:41 +0000 UTC]

Aaah, thank you so much! I've been meaning to start painting soon but I'm much too lazy so I just take tips and tricks of all types. xD
It's a really good work though, really liked it!

And yes, I am a fan. I've even tried doing some fanfiction for it but it's unfinished and I can't remember where I saved it... ^^'

Somehow fanfiction for Ayreon never occured to me... For which album were you going to write?

And if you ever get around to paint something send me a message about it, I'd like to see how it'll turn out - also, if you need advice I'd be happy to try and give some

Morphy1397 In reply to Shasera [2011-04-09 15:32:46 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I'm a complete fanfiction geek, it was the first obvious thing that occurred to me at the time. xD
I was trying (and failing (miserably)) to write the story of Ayreon in all the albums in his point of view, using lyrics as descriptions in most of it so we can sort of see where he was. It was a really weird junction of Ayreon as also being the man on Mars (so yes, kind of a non-canon thing). Quite frankly, I can't remember all that well what I did. I think I was writing it around two years ago or so, and just focused on it for a few days.

In fact, now that I think about it, I think I was actually stealing him for a Sci-Fi of mine but was torn between writing Ayreon fanfiction or doing the original work with him... but I think I kept with fanfiction... argh, memory fail. xD

Aww, that's terribly awesome of you, thank you so much! I'll definitely do that. I'll make sure to try it out soon when I get A3 paper. I'm not going to try canvas and fancy stuff yet, I'll just go around with gouache to start off getting used to it and not waste expensive beauties on crappy works.

Thank you, seriously.

You're very welcome
(though give canvas a try, it's really not more complicated to work with than paper. And I've recently tried out something that's basically like canvas only much thinner - like canvas-fabric with a slim slab of wood or cardboard underneath. It's less expensive than canvas, the DinA4 one cost me about 2 Euro, so maybe just start out with one of those, they're really handy)

Morphy1397 In reply to Shasera [2011-04-09 16:24:38 +0000 UTC]

Aah, yes, I saw some of those on sale too, I think, for about 2 or 3€ as well. But it's just that I'm an Arts student and it's easier and cheaper for me to use regular paper since I can also use it for school and get it easily, it's more practical this way and won't spend too much money in case I have a big break between paintings. I just want to try out the colours and some blending techniques before I get to do the real tries at painting seriously. When I get more space on my room and I'm sure I won't mess up too badly, I'll give canvas a try. I'm not very good at painting (we tried to paint inside a drawing once at school with drawing ink and water, mine was a total mess and I just didn't redo it because there was no time ^^'), which is just another reason to try with something cheap. xD

Thanks again for the support and help, it's really appreciated.

I took a long look at my Ayreon covers, put the Timeline cds in my stereo and used acrylic colors on canvas.

This is a very atmospheric piece. It reminds me of the pictures that Tolkien drew for the Silmarillion or the Misty Marsh. Cool.
