Description
A scowl was etched into Kaine’s face as he was led down the solitary confinement cell block by one of Silverchain’s tiger prison guards, the metallic rattling of his shackles being the only sound that filled the otherwise eerily silent space. Walking past a number of already-occupied cells, they stopped in front of the second-to-last cell whereupon Kaine was unshackled and unceremoniously shoved inside. He turned to face the guard and glared at him, letting out a threatening crocodilian hiss as the guard slammed the door shut and locked it, leaving Kaine alone in his cell; or so he thought.
“I thought dis was supposed to be solitary confinement,” spoke a deep voice from behind.
Kaine turned his attention toward the cell’s other occupant - a hulking shirtless rhino who was lying on his back on the cot in the corner. The rhino lifted his horned head to look at Kaine, whose sullen expression did not change upon recognizing the muscle-bound figure.
“Lucius,” said Kaine listlessly. “I was beginning to worry Shane had got the better of you.”
Lucius scoffed. “If that’s what you think, then you’re just as stupid as he is. That dog got lucky. If it hadn’t been for the guards, he’d be burying his own bones right now.”
A tense silence fell upon the men, which Lucius broke seconds later with a repeat of his previous question. “What are you doin’ in my cell anyways? Don’t yuh have yer own?”
“Apparently not,” said Kaine with a shrug. “All the other cells are occupied. I don’t think I’ve ever seen ‘em all full before.”
Kaine leaned back against the wall and folded his muscular arms across his chest in a sulking manner. Laying his head back down, Lucius spoke.
“So, how’d you end up in the hole this time, croc-boy?”
Kaine hissed. “Let’s just say that a certain koala felt the need to remind me of my botched escape attempt last week. Now I’ve been sent here and he’s been sent to the infirmary.”
Lucius snorted. “Figures. Big, bad Kaine Roland throwin’ a hissy-fit over an insult. Who’da guessed . . . ”
“Oh, don’t play that game with me, Lucius!" laughed Kaine. "How did you end up in solitary, huh? Annoyed you couldn’t beat Shane in a fight so you took your anger out on one of the guards?”
Lucius suddenly sprang to his feet and advanced upon Kaine, flexing the muscles of his bare upper body threateningly. Kaine remained unfazed as Lucius approached him, even though the rhino was far larger than him and much more imposing.
“Dat mutt didn’t get the best of me!” snarled Lucius. “The stupid guards interuppted us! Mark my words, if I get outta here, I’m gonna hunt that dog down and finish the job, with or without your help!”
Kaine smirked at Lucius. “I would say with my help, considering he’s already beaten you on your own.”
Not even a second after the words had left Kaine’s snout, Lucius grabbed the crocodile by his prison garments and hurled him across the cell, watching as he slammed against the wall and landed painfully on the ground, knocking over the cot in the process. As Lucius stomped his way over to Kaine with the intention of breaking as many bones as he could, he suddenly stopped.
Kaine, who was lying sprawled on the ground, had arched his back, as though he had landed on something uneven. Reaching a claw under his back, he pulled out a strange-looking instrument. Upon closer inspection, he realized that it was a blowtorch.
“What duh heck is that?” asked Lucius.
Kaine squeezed the blowtorch’s trigger and a small jet of blue flames briefly burst from the tool’s nozzle before extinguishing. Having finally found the silver lining to a cloud that had been hovering over him ever since his recapture, Kaine grinned at Lucius.
“This, Lucius? This is our ticket out of here.”
Kaine squeezed the trigger again, and once more, a continuous jet of blue fire shot from the nozzle of the blowtorch, illuminating the cell in an eerie, blue glow.
“This . . . is our ticket to revenge on Shane Lyall.”
